The week of 05/29/06 on
T H I S W A Y O U T
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
2 lesbian soloists and voices for a cause inspire this month's "Audiofile";
A neighborhood "Hate Crime" shatters the silver screen;
Beatings and busts turn Moscow Pride into mayhem, U.S. officials notice
executions of queer Iraqis, Scots Catholics find too much education in a new
sex curriculum while the Church of Scotland blesses lesbigay couples and
adoptions, Australia's P.M. defames equality advocates, and more global news
* In "NewsWrap": Violence and mass arrests wreck Moscow's first-ever Pride
festival and parade, while the U.S. State Department finally acknowledges
organized anti-queer kidnappings and murders in Iraq... Scotland's Catholic Church
calls the introduction of lesbigay-friendly sex education in public schools
there "appalling" and "outrageous," but the Church of Scotland General Assembly
votes for conditional approval of adoptions by same gender couples and to allow
blessings of gay and lesbian civil partnerships... Australian P.M. John
Howard takes heat for calling equality advocates "minority fundamentalists"...
queer storks deliver healthy offspring at the Overloon Zoo in Holland... and more
GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week
by JON BEAUPRE and CHARLS HALL).
* First time filmmaker TOMMY STOVALL's thought-provoking new feature "HATE
CRIME" is the story of a long time gay couple planning a commitment ceremony
just as a bigoted Christian zealot moves in next door. As the title suggests,
the couple's happiness is shattered by violence. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE
says "Hate Crime" is a truly "independent film" but with a look that belies its
low budget origins. It's also both a complex suspense drama and a testament to
the damaging consequences of intolerance. With preview clips featuring
scenes including "neighborly" BRUCE DAVISON, Pride talks with screenwriter/director
Stovall and star SETH PETERSON about love, hate, religion, and movie-making
(with outro music from "Jesus by 45" by EBONY TAY and members of the GAY MEN'S
CHORUS OF LOS ANGELES from the "Hate Crime" motion picture soundtrack)
[www.hatecrimemovie.com, www.PrideOnScreen.com].
* Two lesbian artists at the top of their games release solo CDs (excerpts
from "Hallelujah" and "Greyhound Bus" from MARTINE LOCKE's "ON THE VERGE" and
"Winter Coat" and "Bones" from NATALIA ZUKERMAN's "ONLY ONE"), and join with
some compatriots in service to their communities (TRET FURE's "Hawk and the Dove"
and LEVI KREIS' "Man Outta Me" from singer/producer CHRISTY CLAXTON's "PEACE
FROM THE PORCH, VOLUME 2" compilation CD benefiting victims of domestic
violence) in this month's inspiring "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by Locke, Zukerman
and Claxton, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE and written & produced with
CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM) [www.audiofile.org].
