The week of 05/08/06 on
T H I S W A Y O U T
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
A Pentecostal Australian preacher unlearns closet conditioning;
An award-winning photographer captures NYC gay men where they live;
Pride tensions mount in Moscow as Krakow's is attacked, an Iraqi teen
becomes the latest victim of anti-gay Iraqi death squads, 9 men acquitted on
homosexuality charges remain captive in Cameroon, Buenos Aires feds raid a
private gay party, "Milk Carton Mary" breaks her silence, and more GLBT news
* In "NewsWrap": Activists tie attacks this week on 2 gay venues in Moscow by
homophobic mobs in advance of that city's first-ever Pride march later this
month, and assaults by anti-queer counter-demonstrators on Pride marchers in
Krakow in late April, to inflammatory anti-queer rhetoric by government and
religious officials... a 14-year-old boy becomes the latest known victim of a
murderous Shiite-inspired pogrom against gays and lesbians in Iraq, while one of 2
suspects pleads guilty to the brutal murder in June 2004 of Brian Williamson,
founder of J-FLAG, the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays...
the prosecutor's office in Cameroon refuses to release and vows to retry 9 men
acquitted of homosexuality last month... Argentina's Federal Police raid a
private party at Buenos Aires gay bar, harassing over 100 people for more than 4
hours... U.S. Vice President Dick CHENEY's "out" lesbian daughter MARY breaks
her 6-year silence about LGBT issues in a nationally-broadcast TV interview
[with brief excerpts from Diane Sawyer's interview with her on the ABC-TV program
"PrimeTime"]... and more GLBT news from around the world (reported this week
by JON BEAUPRE and CHARLS HALL).
* In 1991, ANTHONY VENN-BROWN fell in love with a man. Not a terribly
unusual thing at the time -- unless you happen to be a leader in AUSTRALIA'S
PENTECOSTAL ASSEMBLIES OF GOD church. So Venn-Brown had some choices to make,
charted in his award-winning 2004 autobiography, "A LIFE OF UNLEARNING, COMING OUT
OF THE CHURCH - ONE MAN'S STRUGGLE." The book opened a floodgate of letters
from people around the world who related to his story, and he continues to offer
comfort to those struggling with conflicts of faith and sexuality. This Way
Out correspondent BARRY MCKAY talks with Anthony Venn-Brown at his home in
Sydney, Australia [www.freedom2b.org, www.anthonyvennbrown.com].
* Award-winning photographer TOM ATWOOD proves the adage "a picture is worth
a thousand words" in his new book "KINGS IN THEIR CASTLES - PHOTOGRAPHS OF
QUEER MEN AT HOME." It's a collective portrait of leading New York City gay
artists, writers, filmmakers, composers, musicians, and designers. Among the
celebrities Atwood photographs at home are Edward Albee, Todd Oldham, Ross
Bleckner, Joel Schumacher, Michael Cunningham, Simon Doonan, Andrew Solomon, Tommy
Tune, Edmund White, John Bartlett, Junior Vasquez, and John Waters, whose décor
is described in some detail. Atwood's lense extends to the less well-known of
an urban gay male community that is slowly disappearing. This Way Out's
STEVE PRIDE chats with Atwood about the book, the queer men he chose - and their
castles [www.tomatwood.com].
