                   ========================================
                           The week of 06/12/06 on
                          T H I S    W A Y    O U T
             the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
     (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
   Canadian Pension Plan plaintiffs plead their case in the Supreme Court;
        Peter Paige's "Say Uncle" mixes humor with a prickly problem;
   Australian feds face off against the A.C.T. over civil unions, the Bush-
 backed Federal Marriage Amendment bombs in the U.S. Senate, protesters rage
against Pride paraders in Poland and Romania but drag queens lead a history-
 making march in Mauritius, teens lead the way in Los Altos, and more news

* In "NewsWrap": The race is on between same gender couples seeking to
legalize their relationships under the Australian Capital Territory's new Civil
Unions Act and the federal government of P.M. John Howard that wants to use its
constitutional power to overturn the law, while the so-called "Federal Marriage
Amendment" is rejected by the U.S. Senate despite PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH's
push for its passage [with a brief excerpt from his radio address on the
subject], and a new Vatican attack calls legal recognition of gay and lesbian
couples "an eclipse of God"... despite violent attempts by skinheads to stop it,
Polish queers and their international supporters march for Pride in Warsaw, but
police need teargas and several arrests to restrain rock-throwing opponents of
a Pride march in Bucharest, Romania, while first-ever Pride parades are lead
in the Indian Ocean nation of Mauritius by feather boa-wearing drag queens and
by "anything but silent" youth and their supporters in the Northern
California city of Los Altos (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by
CHRISTOPHER GAAL and GREG GORDON).

* Are the survivors of long-term gay and lesbian relationships entitled to
the pensions that their partners paid for? That's the question in a case heard
by the SUPREME COURT OF CANADA in mid-May. Legendary Toronto activist GEORGE
HISLOP began a crusade to win Canadian Pension Plan survivor benefits after
his partner of 28 years, Ron Shearer, died in 1986. Hislop himself died last
October at the age of 78, but the case continued in his name and those of 4
co-claimants. "Hislop et al v. Attorney General Of Canada" appears to be both a
demand for basic fairness and a complex legal case involving
sometimes-technical issues, as the plaintiff's lead attorney DOUGLAS ELLIOTT explained recently
during a conversation with This Way Out correspondent HEATHER KITCHING
(excerpts from her "Queer FM" program on CITR/Vancouver).

* Written, directed and starring PETER PAIGE of "Queer as Folk" fame, "SAY
UNCLE" tells the story of gay artist Paul (Paige) whose closest friends, the
Fabers, move to Japan, taking Paul’s two year-old godson Morgan with them. So
what's an "uncle" to do? In Paul's desperate search to replace the lost
relationship with his godson he pursues opportunities that will bring him into
contact with children: working in a toy store, babysitting, and passing many hours
playing with kids at the local playground. But a single, childless gay man at
a playground? One child’s mother, Maggie (KATHY NAJIMY), thinks that Paul is
up to no good and leads a neighborhood campaign against him, which quickly
careens out of control. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE talks with Paige and Najimy
about their movie mix of comedy and challenging questions (with clips from the
film, and outro music from "11:11", from the soundtrack, written and performed
by RUFUS WAINWRIGHT) [www.sayunclefilm.com, prideonscreen.com].
