                           The week of 01/23/06 on
                          T H I S W A Y O U T
                           THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
RUNDOWN for Program #930, distributed 01/23/06
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
     Lesbian "oldies" celebrate their lives and "confer" in Vancouver;
 Golden Globes shine on "Brokeback Mountain", "Capote" and "Transamerica";
Nigeria moves to outlaw marriage equality and rights advocacy, the Euro-
Parliament issues an equal rights warning, Italian protestors challenge
Papal politicking, a Maryland judge overrules marriage discrimination,

* In "NewsWrap": The Nigerian government moves toward not only outlawing same
gender marriage, but jailing anyone who advocates for GLBT rights of any
kind... several Estonian non-governmental groups have signed on to a letter
opposing a pending ban on legal recognition of same gender couples and to urge
passage of a civil partnership law... the European Parliament passes a strong
resolution warning that any member state failing to fight homophobia and protect
the rights of its gay and lesbian citizens could face legal action in the Court
of Human Rights... Italian lesbigays and their supporters rally for marriage
equality in Rome... a Baltimore circuit court judge rules that Maryland's state
statute defining marriage as heterosexual only is unconstitutional... the
Washington state House overwhelmingly approves an anti-discrimination bill that
has been gestating for more than 30 years... and more GLBT news from around the
world (written this week by GREG GORDON and JON BEAUPRE and reported by SHERI
LUNN and RICK WATTS).

* It was the GOLDEN GLOBES Dramatic Motion Picture category that created the
buzz at this year's AWARDS ceremonies, presented in Beverly Hills by the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association on January 16th. In an unusual year of several
politically conscious motion pictures, "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN" led the pack with
7 nominations. It didn't win for Best Score, Best Actor or Best Supporting
Actress/Drama, but it did win the Best Screenplay, Best Song, Best Director,
and Best Picture/Drama trophies. Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Actor/Drama
for his title role in "Capote", and Felicity Huffman took home the Best
Actress/Drama award for her role as male-to-female transsexual Bree in "Transamerica"
[GREG GORDON's report includes excerpts from acceptance speeches by "Brokeback
Mountain" co-writer/co-producer DIANA OSSANA, director ANG LEE and producer
JAMES SHAMUS, and "Transamerica" star FELICITY HUFFMAN).

* Similar gatherings in the past had the right idea, but event planner Pat
Hogan wanted to see something with a more western flavor. "This Way Out"
correspondent NANCY ROSENBLUM was with the more than 160 women who heeded Hogan's
call last September to the first-ever WEST COAST CANADIAN GATHERING & CONFERENCE
-- presented for and by lesbians 50 years old and over, in VANCOUVER, BRITISH
COLUMBIA. Nancy and several participants knitted this multi-voiced "audio
quilt" from the conference (with musical snippets by, among others, LUCIE BLUE
TREMBLAY & CRIS WILLIAMSON).
