My opinion on this is simple. Its obvious that we (GLBT artist /bands) are
heading towards a breakthrough.
I personally don't feel offended by sharing the same space on our stations/
networks with "GLBT friendly artists" but I do feel that we as GLBT artists
have to step up and speed up the process as much as possible.
I think that part of the reason why they (Madonna, Britney etc) have
dominant status in this situation is because the average GLBT consumer has remained
relatively brainwashed by the music industry when it comes to what and who
they should focus their attention and more importantly, their money on.
It amazes me how little the average GLBT consumer actually knows about
us--our music, our music history, and our already-in-place-and-active GLBT music
community! And to make it more interesting, these potential supporters seem
to know almost nothing when it comes to getting involved on our behalf!
I personally have taken the time out of direct self-promotion to enlighten
people about what and who's out there--including providing them with various
GLBT music community stations, networks, web sites, organizations and other
GLBT music artist information. Educating our consumer is the key. Telling them
first hand what our struggle is and how this business works! And why it is
important for them to get involved and stop being so blindly satisfied with the
industry status quo.
As an example of this-- I have and continue to respond to my fans with
information about Radio With A Twist and its current format. I encourage every
single one of them to contact the station directly on a regular basis to provide
them with their personal selection of favorite
GLBT artists, musicians, bands etc.
Included with every email response is the contact tel no and email address
for the radio station. Which was provided to me directly from this Outmusic
group! Thank you again JD Doyle! :D
I believe if we can continue to band together and not fall into this
competitive trap of "who's on first" we can effectively gain the power to increase
our identity in a still severely homophobic music industry.
We all know how all to well just how this "system" works. Now let's make it
work for us! FINALLY!
Thanks for you time.
Sincerely,
SCANDELLE
