Message-ID: <21a.766af65.3113dc4b@aol.com> Hi, Y'all... This is that Houston radio producer sticking in his two cents again. I posted this last year, but it's just as timely now......it's about the Outmusic Awards. I know you noticed the announcement that the Outmusic Board is accepting submissions now, in 10 categories, for the 2006 OMA's, and that the deadline is coming upon us...it's February 10th at midnight. Details on them can be found at http://www.outmusic.com/. I'd love to see as many folks submit as possible, and it's easy for non-members to also submit their CD, so tell your friends. But that's not the real point of my posting this. I was honored to be a judge the last few years, and I realized an extra insight into the process. And, as I'm not on the OM Board, perhaps I can get away with this comment. I think there's an advantage to artists to submit their CD that they may not have thought of. And that is, even if they do not think they have much of a chance to be nominated, they are still being heard by a panel of judges who are EXACTLY the market they want to reach, as far as getting potential exposure. These are the people, the music journalists, the radio producers and DJs, and industry pros, that you want to hear your music. I think this alone (for non-members) would be worth the submission fee. And for members, there's only the little bit of paper work, no excuse not to do it. I remember last year during the judging process that I was so taken with several artists who were new to me that I stopped in the middle of my judging to email the artist to request a copy of their CD. And several of them ended up later on our Audiofile segments. It's a win-win situation. February 10th will be here before you know it. Submit those CDs, ya hear...:) JD Doyle my "Queer Music Heritage" radio show site: http://www.queermusicheritage.com my Outradio site: http://www.outradio.com and co-producer of Audiofile, the monthly radio review of CDs of interest to the GLBT communities, airing on over 150 stations around the world on This Way Out. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving." 4 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity. 3 - You define 0.01s a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99 AILURE was simply the will of God. 2 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian. 1 - U take HoustonBernard's album WHORES HAVE MORE FUN !! www.cdbaby.com/cd/houstonbernard too seriously and want him put in jail for some rough prison sex...Hmm... is that bad? ~TEN~ 12 Reasons Why Homosexuals Shouldn't Marry 1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control. 2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children. 3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children. 4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful. 5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal. 6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities. 7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America. 8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall. 9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. 10. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children. 11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or longer life spans. 12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will. ~ ELEVEN ~ Wanna start a Gay-Str8 Alliance?? or GLBT group?? Do you wish there were more social or political opportunities in your community? If everyone you know hangs out and complains, maybe you should consider creating your own gay and lesbian community organization. It's not as hard as you think! and with Gay Soldiers being treated like trash by some in this country it more important today !! HB How can U start a Gay-Straight Alliance? http://www.gsanetwork.org/resources/start.html What is a Gay-Straight Alliance? A Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club, typically in a high school, which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation, and work to end homophobia. Many GSAs function as a support group and provide safety and confidentiality to students who are struggling with their identity as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning. In addition to support, some GSAs work on educating themselves and the broader school community about sexual orientation and gender identity issues. They may bring in outside speakers to cover a particular topic such as GLBTQ history. They may organize a "Pride Week" or "GLBTQ Awareness Events" and offer a series of educational workshops, panels, and pride celebrations. Many participate in the Day of Silence, a day when participants remain silent all day as a way of acknowledging the silence induced by homophobia in our society. Some GSAs organize a "Teach the Teachers" staff development day which focuses on teaching school staff how to be better allies for GLBTQ students. For example, GSA members would present scenarios about discrimination or harassment and get teachers to brainstorm how to respond to those situations. Other GSAs are activist clubs and have worked to get GLBTQ issues represented in the curriculum, GLBTQ related books in the library, and progressive non-discrimination policies implemented at a district level. All of these different types of GSAs also provide a social outlet for GLBTQ students and their straight allies. Lots of GSAs organize barbeques or movie nights, go to the Gay Prom in Hayward or the GLBT Pride Parade in San Francisco, and attend conferences together. GSAs are a great way to build community at your school and lessen the isolation that GLBTQ students might otherwise experience. How can I start a Gay-Straight Alliance? 1. Follow Guidelines: Establish a GSA the same way you would establish any other group or club. Look in your Student Handbook for the rules at your school. This may include getting permission from an administrator, finding an advisor, and/or writing a constitution. 2. Find a Faculty Advisor: Find a teacher or staff member whom you think would be supportive or who has already shown themselves to be an ally around sexual orientation issues. It could be a teacher, counselor, nurse, or librarian. 3. Inform Administration of Your Plans: Tell administrators what you are doing right away. It can be very helpful to have an administrator on your side. They can work as liaisons on your behalf with other teachers, parent groups, community members, and the school board. If an administrator is resistant to the GSA, let them know that forming a GSA club is protected under the Federal Equal Access Act. 4. Inform Guidance Counselors and Social Workers About The Group: These individuals may know students who would be interested in attending the group. 5. Pick a Meeting Place: You may want to find a meeting place which is off the beaten track at school and offers some level of privacy or confidentiality. 6. Advertise: Figure out the best way to advertise at your school. It may be a combination of school bulletin announcements, flyers, and word-of-mouth. If your flyers are defaced or torn down, do not be discouraged. Keep putting them back up. Eventually, whoever is tearing them down will give up. Besides, advertising for your group and having words up such as "gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning" or "end homophobia" or "discuss sexual orientation" can be part of educating the school and can actually make other students feel safer -- even if they never attend a single meeting. 7. Get Food: This one is kind of obvious. People always come to meetings when you provide food! 8. Hold Your Meeting! You may want to start out with a discussion about why people feel having this group is important. You can also brainstorm things your club would like to do this year. 9. Establish Ground Rules: Many groups have ground rules in order to insure that group discussions are safe, confidential, and respectful. Many groups have a ground rule that no assumptions or labels are used about a group member's sexual orientation. This can help make straight allies feel comfortable about attending the club. 10. Plan For The Future: Develop an action plan. Brainstorm activities. Set goals for what you want to work towards. Contact Gay-Straight Alliance Network in order to get connected to all of the other GSAs, get supported, and learn about what else is going on in the community. USE THE RESOURCES AND IDEAS OF GSA NETWORK! HOw to start a gay group 1. Find out whether a gay and lesbian group already exits in your area. There's no point in recreating the wheel if that group is a success and might meet your needs. The Internet, the classifieds, bulletin boards and the local gay paper would all be good sources to check. 2. If you don't find anything, organize a get-together of your friends and friends' friends Discuss what you think the community needs; brainstorm. Solicit other people to join you in your undertaking. 3. Find a place to hold your first meeting and book it for your selected date and time. Church halls are often hospitable and reasonably priced venues. A side room in a local restaurant would also work. Take a look at it to make sure it's suitable. 4. Assemble a list of local press outlets (newspapers, radio and TV stations) and send each a press release announcing your first meeting, making sure you include a contact number in case they want to call you. Do this about 10 days before your event. 5. Use word of mouth to get more people to attend the meeting. Putting up flyers and taking out small personal ads can also be effective. 6. Sketch out how you are going to run the first meeting to maximize its impact and usefulness. Don't forget refreshments and any special information you might bring for the attendees. A questionnaire can be a fun and informative way of discovering people's interests. 7. Go to the meeting place early and make sure everything is set up properly, the lights are on, chairs are out and so on. Tips: It's a good idea to attract or solicit volunteers who can handle publicity, provide refreshments and have experience running a group. Keep in mind what you are trying to accomplish (a successful, popular group) and keep moving toward your goal, gathering as many allies and co-workers as you can. Initially, you may "pass the basket" to get money for room rental, refreshments and other expenses. Early on, the group will spend lots of time deciding how it will be organized, how often the group will meet, what its goals will be and even its name. Ideally, as time goes on, more members of the community will be attracted, and your group will begin to take on a life of its own. Warnings: Rarely, a homophobic person may come to a meeting and try to hassle people. These types can usually be persuaded to leave or calm down. Having several strong men around can be effective at discouraging hostility. In case of a serious threat, call the police. ~TWELVE~ Looking for an amazing Travel Agent ?? Message-ID: <1ac.478a9e5f.311629a1@aol.com> Dear Outsters-- Sigh.. http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=4455342 Two Injured In Downtown Building Fire A two story building in the 300 block of East 5th Street is on fire. Just minutes ago, the Austin Fire Department structural engineers arrived on the scene to a do a survey and to determine whether or not the building is structurally safe. KXAN News has also learned that Austin Energy crews have turned off electricity to the entire block. Traffic is blocked off at the intersections of 5th street between San Jacinto and Trinity. We're told the buildings on fire include at least two nightclubs, including Club Lick. The building also is home to KOOP radio, which last month was damaged by an electrical fire. Several nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution. One person who was inside the building was rescued by Austin firefighters. We're told that victim was an occupant of an adjoining building who was treated at the scene. One Austin firefighter was injured during the fire fight and has been treated for minor injuries. EMS officials tell us the firefighter was hit by debris as he exited the building. As many as 75 firefighters are on the scene making this a 4-Alarm Fire. The investigation into the cause of the fire will begin just as soon as the building is safe to enter. Posted to the KOOP list: All scheduled events at the radio station are canceled for the time being and I'm sure additional information will be posted to the list as it becomes available. At KO.OP's request, KVRX will take over the radio frequency through the weekend as we evaluate the situation and make further plans. ..Sigh again.. Well, I'm glad no one was killed this time either.. This second fire destroyed all of KOOP?s studio equipment. KOOP had been damaged in a fire on January 6th, 2006 when a fire in a second floor apartment caused considerable damage to the building and significant smoke damage to KOOP ?s equipment. The February 4th fire started in a club located on the same block as KOOP. The fire spread from the club to the building that houses KOOP, and then rapidly spread up to KOOP?s studios and offices. KVRX is broadcasting for KOOP throughout the weekend. KOOP will not be able to resume full operations until we secure new equipment and a new location. KOOP is working on contingency plans to return to the air with limited capabilities. Through the efforts of our staff, volunteers, and listeners, KOOP had begun to recover from the January 6th fire. This second event further strains KOOP? s already exhausted volunteers, staff and limited resources. Nevertheless, KOOP is determined to return to the airwaves to serve the community and fulfill its mission. A mini membership drive, in partnership with Charity Partners of Austin (www.charitypartnersofaustin.org), had been scheduled for this weekend (February 4-5). Contributions may be made to KOOP?s website at www.koop.org. KOOP faces a significant financial challenge in the coming months. It anticipates paying at least double the amount of rent it currently pays. Additionally, it will have to replace all studio equipment and spend a significant amount to build out a new studio. George W. It started back in 1996, when the federal government outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation. It peaked last year when the country became the fourth in the world to legalize same gender marriage. But the future of LGBT rights seemed in doubt last month as the country headed into a January 23rd federal election. The queer-positive Liberal Party, which had ruled the country for almost 13 years, seemed destined to go down to defeat to the one party in the country that has opposed marriage equality -- the Conservatives. This Way Out correspondent HEATHER KITCHING ["Queer FM"/CiTR-Vancouver] offers some post-elections analysis, with comments by gay Conservative organizer GARY MITCHELL and LAURIE ARRON of EGALE, the country's leading queer advocacy group. * When the legendary Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras throws its gala event this year, the legendary JIMMY SOMERVILLE will be the headline act. The openly gay Somerville came to fame with mid-80s BRONSKI BEAT hits "Smalltown Boy" and "(Tell Me) Why". He's also bringing his new "Evolve" show to Sydney and Melbourne, joined by each city's Gay & Lesbian Choir. This Way Out correspondent JOHN FRAME ["Queer Radio"/4ZZZ-Brisbane] shared a pre-tour and pre-bedtime cup of tea with Somerville, chatting about his latest CD "Home Again", the nonsense of unequal age of consent laws, boy band "outings" -- and his heartfelt belief in humanity (with music from "Come On" from "Home Again" and Bronski Beat's "Why"). ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Message-ID: <2d6.2993151.311d6261@aol.com> Hi, A week or so ago I got an unusual request from a website visitor, and didn't quite know what to tell him. So I figured I would just post it and see who chimes in with ideas. Send them to me and I will forward them. Thanks! JD Doyle His letter may be a little detailed, but it tells exactly what he's hoping for...it goes: //////////////////////////////////// I am a queer male, involved with same-sex ballroom dancing. I've taught Ballroom in the straight world. (In March I'll be teaching a same-sex class in San Jos?? at the LGBT Center). I have connections with ALL the same-sex ballroom/social dance venues in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. However Same-Sex ballroom dancing is in it's infancy. So it's ripe to accept new, cutting-edge music, yet the music must remain appropriate to the established ballroom/social dances. While many of my queer brothers and sisters who perform and compete in the same-sex ballroom scene (such as at the Gay Games) seem satisfied dancing to regular (straight-lyric) music, I remain unsatisfied. I envision starting an alternative trend. MY REQUEST: Your site lists SO many artists with SO many musical styles. That's great. But perhaps you can point me in a direction toward the more 'big-band' and/or 'latin' artists where I might find same-sex music -- MUSIC WHOSE LYRICS EXTOLS SAME-SEX RELATIONSHIPS -- that might be appropriate to same-sex BALLROOM dancing. MY VISION: I will be willing to PURCHASE CDs that you recommend, listen to EACH track, and give my (albeit, subjective) opinion about which cut will be appropriate for what type of 'ballroom' dance. Naturally, in addition to lyrics promoting same-sex love (or angst) I would be looking for 1) consistency of beat 2) appropriateness for a given type of established dance. 3) a fairly rich, orchestration. I'd bet you already have some idea of what I mean, but here's a fairly comprehensive list of the dances: Cha Cha / Samba / Rumba / Paso Doble / Jive / Swing / Lindy / Quickstep Foxtrot / Waltz / Viennese Waltz / Bolero / Salsa / Mambo / Nightclub 2-step Country Western 2-step What I have found *thus far*, which usually *doesn't* work, are songs with a simple "folksy" sound and/or songs with only a piano background. And -- with perhaps the exception of a brief intro -- any given song needs to maintain a constant beat throughout. This may be a tall order -- but I'm convinced that some songs fitting these requirements exist. I have some 'pull' with the DJs at these same-sex ballroom events, and -- if a given song seems appropriate -- I *WILL* be approaching those DJs, encouraging them to play those songs at these events. Please consider helping me out. I'm in no rush, and whatever practical suggestions or leads you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I don't have the resources to purchase EVERY CD you have listed. So your candid direction will be appreciated. In an email sent by one of our tech guys, it went something like this... "Here is an overview of the fire investigation conclusion. A press conference was held at AFD headquarters to explain the findings, and included several diagrams to explain the fire's progress. The cause of the fire was attributed to a short circuit in a switch on an HVAC system located in a 3' x 3' closet on the ground floor of the space formerly housing Club Taste/Lick. This closet was constructed next to a stairwell with plywood walls essentially surrounding the HVAC system. The short caused an arc, which eventually led to ignition of the plywood. One of the walls immediately adjacent to the staircase was breached, and fed the fire up the staircase to the second floor, where it ignited (fresh and ready oxygen supply)and raced along the second floor (this conflagration was heard by firefighters above them as they entered the ground floor of the building). It's possible that the fire smoldered in the closet for a number of hours before it broke out and up the stairwell. That structure's second floor was then immersed, and the roof breached, and allowed the fire to jumped to our building. As Andrew explained, the lack of interior wall and ceiling material on the second floor of our building afforded the fire a clear path to travel west until it encountered the brick wall that formed part of the east wall structure of our space. The conflagration of the second floor and roof led to the fire breaching our space. The AFD web page has contact info for requesting incident reports. There is an attempt to post incident summaries on this page, but unfortunately, it has not been updated in awhile." Okay, that's what happened, and here's what happening.. I'm part of a committee that's picked out a great new location. For those of you who know Austin, it's close to downtown and the campus, a block or so west of the capital building. If things proceed well, we might be up and running by April, I hope. (Actually, I hope sooner, so we can catch more of the SXSW action..) Till then, we're trying to make arrangements to find a place to broadcast temporarily. It might be just a mic or two, a couple of CD players and a couple of turntables, but it would be nice to be back on the air. It kills me that we're not on the air this weekend. I think it hits at the very heart of most of us, and I'm preparing a letter to Mr. Farber myself. He has his points--the one person I've shared this with marvelled at how he can "be so right and so wrong." Judge for yourselves, my darlings, from J. Farber's column.. By the way, his email address is jfarber at edit.nydailynews.com, if you feel so inclined as to respond to him directly.. New York Daily News - http://www.nydailynews.com AOL strikes wrong chord Wednesday, February 15th, 2006 Does music have a sexual orientation? Apparently America OnLine thinks so. Call up their massively popular AOLmusic.com site, scroll through their "musical styles" choices, and right below "soundtracks" and just above "classic rock" you'll find a heretofore undiscovered genre known as "gay and lesbian" music. If nothing else, this begs some intriguing questions about your CD collection: How, exactly, would a CD become gay? To this gay man, the absurdity of the question begs the most blinkered suppositions: Was the CD abused by an LP when it was young? Did it lack a proper stereo system to guide it while it was growing up? Or maybe it was the product of some "intelligent design" decision at the manufacturing level - the technological equivalent to the so-called "gay gene." AOLmusic isn't the only sonically minded company thinking gay these days. Sony/BMG has just proudly trumpeted a new label meant to tout lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered artists called Twist. Its first releases arrive this June. The label comes complete with a syndicated radio show, which just began spinning "gay music" locally on WPLJ Sundays from 10 p.m. to midnight. On the surface, this all reads as terribly liberated, as if the conglomerates were saying: "Look how gay-friendly we are! We're promoting you guys to the hilt." Unfortunately for, say, Twist, most gay musicians would sooner be shoved into the "spoken word" category than be ghettoized by their sexual-object choice. It's not that many don't want to be known for who they are. It's that they make music for the same audience any artist does: as large and lucrative a one as possible. By labeling their music "gay," it sends the message to straight people that they can't possibly relate to what they're singing about. Is this something tomorrow's Elton John would want to tell his potential listeners? In the case of AOLmusic, the "gay and lesbian" music section makes assumptions about taste that necessarily stumble into stereotype. Take a look at what AOL considered "gay music" in its debut week: A show tune (from "Rent"), a song from a fashion-oriented sexpot (Gwen Stefani) and a dance cut from - guess who? - Madonna. Why not go all the way and throw in something from Judy Garland? The only two acts included in the pop top 10 of late that have openly gay members are the one-named singer Antony and the Scissor Sisters, who, at least in England, have enough presumably straight fans to have hit No. 1 on the charts several times. Of course, AOL didn't become a major corporation by being dumb. Stereotypes have some basis in truth. If you go to a Pet Shop Boys concert in New York, it's a safe bet a hefty percentage of those attending have been to a bar named Splash. And, of course, we've all gone to Broadway musicals and found ourselves wondering, briefly, why the line at the men's room is so much longer than the one at the women's. But AOL's labeling of music as "gay and lesbian" is hardly the benign equivalent to those like-named sections that appear in travel books, city magazines or Internet guides like Craigslist. Those outlets provide crucial information for LGBT people about health, safety and the most likely place to find sex at 3 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon. What's irritating about the growing "gay" demarcation for music isn't only that it's nonsensical. It's that it purports to be cutting edge while hinging on something as old as the proverbial hills: targeting a market. Worse, this particular targeting operates on an antique model. For years, gay media sold itself to the advertising world on the strength of the community's uncommon amount of disposable income, generated by having no kids to support. But with gay couples currently crowding the nation's fertility clinics and adoption houses, it's no longer a sure thing that they can, at whim, spend $300 on a throw cushion. If AOL and other media outlets are so eager to codify gay taste, maybe they should go all the way and create their own version of the Kinsey Scale. Brainstormed by the famous sexologist in the '50s, Alfred Kinsey's scale rated people's orientation on a measure of 0 to 6. "0" was the "most straight," "6" the "most gay," with all kinds of tantalizing gradations in between. For the musical equivalent of "0" you'd have, say, Buju Banton (the dance hall star whose songs call for gay people to be slaughtered en masse). For "6" you could have something by Morrissey, whose lyrics epitomize that famous "gay sensibility" more bitingly than anyone since Oscar Wilde. The problem is, Morrissey has never declared his sexual orientation. And what would we do with someone like Rob Halford, singer of the metal band Judas Priest, who has come out but who makes the most conventionally macho music on the planet? Maybe this "gay music" stuff isn't as easy as it looks. * * * This week's 'Gay Music' (according to AOLmusic, that is) 1. "Just Stopping By" (DJ set), Andy Bell 2. "Behind These Hazel Eyes" (live), Kelly Clarkson 3. "Dare," Gorillaz 4. "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," K.T. Tunstall 5. "I've Got a Life," Eurythmics 6. There is a point to what he is saying, but some of us would prefer to be in a genre based on who we love as much as on our music. I prefer to be as out as can be as a musician. I think the problem is primarily how "gay music" is defiined. I dont consider Madonna, Cher, Barbara etc to be gay music. Gay music is music created by individuals who identify as LGBTQ that speaks not only to human experience, but to thier unique experinces as queer people. Maybe the term outmusic should not only represent an organization but a genre, to distinguish it from what the Mega-Corps are calling gay music and trying to shove down the throats of predominatly upper-middle class white urban men, who dont even represent the majority of real queer experience. I have just touched on this issue and will probably have more to say after digesting it a bit. Again it's a real tricky issue, I see his point but I think it ( as usual) neglects an entire segment of quuer culture who dont live in NYC, and drink martinis at splash with thier pretty freinds who all look like they stepped out of a mens catalog and use "product " in thier hair. What about the women, the people of color, the bears, gay seniors, et al .... I wonder what "gay music" would be if we were all represented. Aussie MPs challenge their government's hard line anti-marriage equality stance, while U.S. state legislatures and courts debate the issue... 11 men are sentenced to five year prison terms for homosexuality in the United Arab Emirates... Pride is celebrated in Melbourne, Australia and Phuket, Thailand, but organizers of Moscow's first-ever event face strong government and religious opposition, including threats of violence... and more GLBT news from around the world (written this week by GREG GORDON, and reported by SHERI LUNN and RICK WATTS). * Freedom to Marry Week was observed in the U.S. as part of the February 14th Valentine's Day love-fest. Among several actions, perhaps most notable was the formation of a national coalition of queer people of color organizations aimed at advancing marriage equality in their respective communities. A media teleconference provided an opportunity for representatives of the newly partnered organizations to outline what they're doing, and to discuss the similarities and differences they share in that task. These highlights include comments by RENEE HILL, a community outreach organizer for LAMBDA LEGAL; ANDY SHIE KEE WONG of ASIAN EQUALITY; H. ALEXANDER ROBINSON of the NATIONAL BLACK JUSTICE COALITION; MARTHA DONAYRE of the NATIONAL LATINO/A COALITION FOR JUSTICE; and SAMIYA BASHIR of FREEDOM TO MARRY. www.nbjcoalition.org www.latinojustice.org (under construction) www.lambdalegal.org www.freedomtomarry.org * Bucking the notion that all country music singers are homophobes, the iconoclastic WILLIE NELSON was one such crooner to contribute a tune to the "Brokeback Mountain" soundtrack. He's now released a song -- on Valentine's Day last week -- that questions cowboy sexuality, written by Texas-born singer-songwriter Ned Sublette in 1981. Although it's also been recorded by queer groups Pansy Division and Rick & Andy, the song has "been in the closet for 20 years," Nelson told reporters. "The timing's right for it to come out," he said. "I'm just opening the door." Here's a slightly-edited-for-radio version of his "COWBOYS ARE FREQUENTLY, SECRETLY (FOND OF EACH OTHER)". ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Since then, community organizations and individuals have rallied and raised over $20,000 to help the station recover and relocate. In the coming months, a slew of benefit events are being planned to help raise money for the station. After taking stock of the damage and considering the costs of moving and build-out, the station still faces a lot of uncertainties. ?We don?t know how much money we will recover from insurance or how much of a building credit we will get from our new landlord,? said Station Manager Amy Wright. ?What we do know is we suffered $100,000 in damage to studio equipment, furniture, and the music library. And, we know we will spend at least double the amount we used to pay for rent.? In addition, KOOP expects to pay roughly $15,000 for build-out of a permanent studio space in coming months. While Board President Andrew Dickens has arranged to temporarily lease studio space, he points out that the new location ? is just an empty room right now, so it will take roughly a week or so to get back on the air in a limited capacity.? With a goal of a mid-week return to the airwaves, the short-term effort includes installing a transmitter ISDN and using a patchwork of donated studio equipment from KEOS Radio in College Station. The effort for permanent relocation has been made easier by several generous donations in the past two weeks including Charity Partners of Austin ($2,000), the DELL Foundation ($2,500) and the Austin Babtist Women on behalf of the Texas Gay Rodeo Association Austin Chapter ($3,529.71). A series of benefit shows raised $4,100 and individual donations on KOOP?s website (_www.koop.org_ (http://www.koop.org/) ) have generated an additional $8,500. KOOP Radio also thanks Beerland, Taco Xpress, Ten Thousand Villages, Ruta Maya, Buffalo Exchange, Beerland, H & H Ballroom, Shoal Creek Saloon, KMFA, KUT, KVRX, Clear Channel Austin, and Border Media Partners for contributing to the recovery effort. Additional benefit shows are slated in the coming month, including: 1) The Sinus Show presents TOP GUN ? ONE SCREENING ONLY!! Thursday, Feb 23 (9:45pm) Alamo Drafthouse South (1120 S. Lamar) Admission: $10.50 2) KOOP Movie Night Screening: THE TAKE Monday, Feb 27 (8:00pm) Monkey Wrench Books (110 E. Message-ID: Hi from Houston, I recently suggested to an artist friend that he upload some of his older material onto iTunes, as I had gotten requests from listeners wanting to obtain his songs after I featured him on my show/site. He has no CDs currently available and I figured this would be a way to get his music to people. He wrote back saying he was kind of tech-challenged and asked if I knew how to go about that. Well, as I'm just on the consumer end of iTunes, I had no idea. Can some of you folks post to the list your own feelings about that....ie....how hard is it technically? is it a good idea? any problems with iTunes and how they administer your account? would you recommend it for someone who is not financially at a point where they can have CDs made?....etc, etc..... and, also, I'm a relatively new member of myspace, and enjoy it, and have discovered a few artists new to me there.....how do y'all who have your music on it feel about the site? Has it helped your sales? exposure? any negative aspects? Thanks, just stuff I've been curious about... And, let me get in another plug for my OutRadio site....and offer a thought....with the exception of about one or two shows listed there, none of us do this for a living, it's all volunteer work (because we love doing it), but we do Not have unlimited personal budgets and just cannot afford to buy every CD all of you put out, even if we knew the new CD existed (and often we don't). So we depend on you sending them to us....if we don't have 'em, well, we can't play 'em...Thanks!.....:) http://www.outradio.com JD Doyle my "Queer Music Heritage" radio show site: http://www.queermusicheritage.com my Outradio site: http://www.outradio.com and co-producer of Audiofile, the monthly radio review of CDs of interest to the GLBT communities, airing on over 150 stations around the world on This Way Out. Message-ID: <1a4.491ecbfe.31369151@aol.com> In our exclusive March 2006 GGW interview, Chicago heavy rock guitarist and transgirl-in-transition LISA KOFFEE opens up about her ability, ambition and sincerity to the "craft". Lisa is currently lead guitarist with Flesh Hungry Dog and owns an exact same Gibson Les Pro 1976 "rock 'n roll" model with the single coil stock soapbar pick-ups as yours truly!! Read all about Lisa's life in music at: http://www.roberturban.com/GGWinterviewlisakoffee.html "I'm not an outrageous girl... I have very humble beginnings... From my Mother who played piano, and wanted to pass it on to me - to my Dad who bought me a Gretsch Country Gentleman for proving to him I was serious in my ability. I'm just coming into this world as Lisa Koffey on a "full time" basis. I still have many experiences to learn from and many friends to make. I'm not afraid to fall and get up and I'm not afraid to stand up for what I believe in. But Music will have to be pried away from my life as I will kick and scream to keep it! All my love to you and the players that keep music alive in their hearts". - Lis See all of Gay Guitarists Worldwide's featured Hall of Fame players at: http://roberturban.com/gayguitaristsworldwide.html Join GAY GUITARISTS WORLDWIDE at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gayguitarists luv - robert urban URBAN PRODUCTIONS, NYC www.roberturban.com GAY GUITARISTS WORLDWIDE http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gayguitarists Crank it up - our time has come!
