We have a chance for a Rubberlegs song to be included on the next CD Baby "top sellers" compilation CD, which will ship free to everyone who orders from their site. An awesome promotional opportunity! To make it into the top 100 sellers, we only have to sell a little more than 30 CDs, in August. I think we can do it! Now that we finally have a thousand shrink-wrapped "Timinator" CDs in our possession, I really haven't minded giving them away for free -- we want as many people as possible to have the CD. And we are grateful to our friends who bought a copy at the CD release party and elsewhere. This promotion means we have to actually sell a few more, so please forgive me for leaning on you so hard... If you don't already have "The Timinator," here's your chance to get it, and it's only $7.77. In fact, you can get it for as little as $5 ( http://cdbaby.com/sale) or even less, in combination with other CDs. Or, you can buy our retrospective CD "Leg Warmers Reheated." These CDs make great gifts! You can help us spread some electronic love. And if you like your Rubberlegs CD, you can give us a little shot in the arm by ooohing and ahhhing in a quick review, at the bottom of one or both of our CD Baby pages. Start here: http://www.cdbaby.com/all/rubberlegs < http://www.cdbaby.com/all/rubberlegs> I first came across CD Baby when I read about a limited-edition live Thomas Dolby recording, released only on CD Baby ( http://cdbaby.com/cd/dolby < http://cdbaby.com/cd/dolby> ). It's one of my favorites, recorded for a gathering of friends on his 40th birthday, featuring Thomas on synths and vocals, and three other musicians including Brian Salter, who plays an amazing e-wi (electronic wind instrument) out of which he coaxes all kinds of clarinets, oboes, saxes, trumpets -- simply breathtaking (sorry). And I love the song selection. If you never heard Dolby's '90s album "Astronauts and Heretics", you can get a sense of what you missed from the live version of "I Love You Goodbye". Thomas Dolby may have been a founding member of the electropop community, but at heart he is a truly great singer-songwriter. I was pleasantly surprised to see a Jaco Pastorius "early years" CD listed as one of their all-time top sellers ( http://cdbaby.com/topever < http://cdbaby.com/topever> ), as well as one by Stan Ridgway from Wall of Voodoo. To put it mildly, we ADORE CD Baby, they totally rock! Thanks for listening, and please let me know if you can help us out with this August promotion. For those too young to know of Arthur Lee and/or his band LOVE - read below. His magnum opus album - LOVE FOREVER CHANGES - had such a profound effect on me in my youth - it somehow spoke to the gay soul in me in ways I couldn't even understand at the time. Haunting, beautiful, symphonic, psychedelic, heavy - the album has it all. I urge anyone interested in the best of the very best of rock music to check it out. - sigh - Robert Urban ____________________________ Arthur Lee (Love) is a man larger than life. A flamboyant artist with a trail of myth and mythology that follows him like a purple feathered boa. His band Love was the first rock band signed to Electra, and Arthur is responsible for talking Jac Holtzman into signing the Doors. Before all this, in 1964, Arthur gave his friend, an unknown Jimi Hendrix, his first appearance on record (the Arthur penned My Diary, by Rosa Lee Brooks). Love's third recording, "Forever Changes", is still widely considered to be one of the great rock n roll discs of all time. Love were true artists, but not "careerist". They preferred living together in "the castle" near Griffith Park, to life on the road. Arthur even turned down invitations to perform at the Monterrey Pop Festival and Woodstock. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Arthur Lee, the eccentric singer/guitarist with influential 1960s rock band Love, has died in a Memphis hospital after a battle with leukemia, his manager said on Friday. He was 61. ADVERTISEMENT "His death comes as a shock to me because Arthur had the uncanny ability to bounce back from everything, and leukemia was no exception," Mark Linn said in an email to Reuters. "He was confident that he would be back on stage by the fall." Lee died on Thursday at about 5 p.m. EDT at Methodist University Hospital with his wife Diane at his side, Linn added. Lee, a Memphis native who referred to himself as "the first so-called black hippie," formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965, emerging from the same scene as groups like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Doors and the Mamas and Papas. The first multiracial rock band of the psychedelic era, Love recorded three groundbreaking albums fusing traditional folk rock and blues with symphonic suites and early punk. Bands as diverse as Led Zeppelin, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Siouxsie and the Banshees cited Love as an influence. The band's self-titled debut yielded the hit single "My Little Red Book," written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. The 1967 follow-up, "Da Capo," was one of the first rock albums to feature a song, "Revelation," that took up an entire side. A third release, 1968's "Forever Changes," which boasted adventurous horn and string arrangements, is considered Love's bold response to the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" album. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at No. 40 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. But Love, which rarely left Los Angeles, lost momentum as Lee hired new musicians and pursued a solo career. Various reunions amounted to little, and Lee's eccentricities landed him in a California prison for six years during the 1990s for firing a pistol into the air. After his release in late 2001, Lee assembled a new version of Love and toured Europe and North America, often playing "Forever Changes" in its entirety. Lee was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia this year. In May, facing certain death after three rounds of chemotherapy failed, he became the first adult in Tennessee to undergo a bone marrow transplant using stem cells from an umbilical cord, according to The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal. Doctors said the procedure lifted his chances of survival only moderately, the newspaper said. Several benefit concerts were held in Britain and the United States to help Lee with his medical bills. Former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant headlined a benefit in New York in June. Photo by PETER DIANTONI. ST. PETERSBURG-Cher put it best when she sang, "If I Could Turn Back Time." International Latin singer/actor Jade Esteban Estrada took a cue from the pop diva and actually peeled back the hands of time to portray a half-dozen important gay and lesbian historical figures in each of his one-man musicals titled ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 1 and 2. Estrada begins each section portraying a pivotal gay or lesbian character from long ago. From there he moves forward in time picking out other key individuals in gay history. Between characters, Estrada 'travels through time' to become the next icon. Estrada prides himself on these transitions between characters, noting that for some actors that can be the most difficult part of any production, but it comes easily to him. "Transitions, that's my thing," he says. In ICONS, Estrada begins with history's 'first' lesbian, Sappho, admitting the character is one of his favorites. From there he treats us to days in the life of esteemed artist Michelangelo, authors Oscar Wilde and Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Rivera, the teenage transgender warrior who threw the first shoe in the Stonewall Riots, and finally, Ellen DeGeneres. Writing and choreographing the show himself, Estrada is really quite convincing when in character. Once he begins, the characters seem to take on a life of their own. "Oh, I'm gone. I'm in the back smoking a cigarette," he says. "They become their own people." Estrada has a particular fondness for Oscar Wilde. "I can walk onstage with a 105 degree fever, I can be just waking up, or I can have not slept for 4 days and he is always the same in energy. I love that about him." The inspiration for these one-man, one-act plays came about from a love of history that Estrada incorporated with his other passions: music, comedy and performing. "I got the idea for ICONS because I have always loved history. I had the opportunity to do a show at the Columbus National Gay and Lesbian Theatre Festival. I come from musical theatre so I thought I'd put the things I love all together in a fun way. In Spanish we say, "Ensename con quien andas y te digo quien eres," (show me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are). Well, I started to meet people from GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign in my touring and I could not help but care after a while about the gay movement around the world. So with the history I already had and my history as a singer, I came up with this." "They say that nothing you do in life is ever wasted and I believe that to be true. I hated tap class. In my Harvey Milk segment, I tap all the time. I used to always sing the girl part in 5th grade (before my voice changed) and here I am with Sappho remembering what it is like to be that young in my head. With Oscar Wilde, I used to live in England, so when I put this together it was like, 'If I hadn't done and experienced these particular things, I would have no clue how to do some of this stuff.'" Although they have not met, Ellen DeGeneres is aware of Estrada's portrayal of her-her mom told her all about it. "I'm friends with Betty DeGeneres. We met working together with the Human Rights Campaign. She is really into it. You know how moms can be. She's a sweetheart and a great activist in the community." Estrada began his career in comedy and music. Dubbed "America's Prince of Pride" by NBC News, he has participated in 168 Pride celebrations around the world in the past five years. "As a Latin pop singer, I love my job, but I do plan to return to stand-up comedy once ICONS 3 opens and has had its run." He has performed in seven languages and in 33 countries to date. In 1995, he was awarded "Funniest Amateur Comic in New York" and has had this music featured on FX's "The Shield." He spent some time as Charo's lead dancer and has shared the stage with Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Margaret Cho, RuPaul, Jody Watley and Jimmy Somerville. Genre Magazine calls him "the most exciting Latin pop artist ever to emerge onto the music scene." ICONS was produced by Gypsy Productions at the Suncoast Resort Theatre last year. In honor of St. Pete Pride and was brought back in May, accompanied by ICONS 2 which begins at the funeral of Alexander the Great's lover and rifles through time and characters like Billie Jean King, Mark Bingham, Harvey Milk and others. ICONS 3 is on the horizon-Estrada plans to debut the production in the fall in Columbus, Ohio. He described ICONS as being in the format of "a happy cabaret." ICONS 2 is a little darker. "It is the middle child so it's going to be a little different. For ICONS 3, I'd like to put the best of what I've learned together. It is going to be a big splashy show. It's the last one in the trilogy so I want to go out with a bang." When in comes to the creative process, Estrada says "it" just comes naturally for him. "Sometimes as an artist, we don't have a choice with these things. We have to do it. It haunts us in our sleep. It pushes you off the bed until you write it down and capture it. An idea flies in the air and searches for a place to live?it wants to live in your head." With ICONS and ICONS 2 I learned so much about myself that I look forward to finding out what is behind ICONS 3." Estrada says he loves playing the Tampa Bay area and will definitely bring ICONS 3 here next year. "I am happy to have come back to this area so many times. We have a great time. The people are awesome and very progressive in this particular part of Florida. You guys really care about equality and diversity and it's obvious. My show is interactive so I can always tell exactly where I am by the way people react. Politically or emotionally you can always tell. I always get a quick, clever audience when I come to Florida." Magdalena (Emily Rios) is the daughter of a Mexican-American family who runs a storefront church in the ECHO PARK enclave of Los Angeles. With her fifteenth birthday approaching, all she can think about is her boyfriend, her Quincea?era dress, and the Hummer Limo she hopes will carry her on her special day. But a few months before the celebration, Magdalena becomes pregnant. Forced out of her home, she moves in with great-great uncle Tomas (Chalo Gonzalez), an old man who makes his living selling champurrado (a Mexican hot drink) in the street. Already living with him is Carlos (Jesse Garcia), Magdalena's cousin, a tough cholo who was thrown out by his parents for being gay. The back house rental where Tomas has lived happily for many years is on a property recently purchased by an affluent white gay couple ? pioneers of gentrification in the neighborhood. Photo by JONNA HUSEMAN. Pride brings an extra worthy theatre event to the Gulf Coast with ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 2 performed by the Prince of Pride, himself, Jade Esteban Estrada. Turn back time a week or two and there, bejeweled, be Jade. But it's not mere rocks that give this proud prince his bling. The lesbian-impersonating thespian who calls Comedy Central his home reflects the glittering aura of gay heroes as if he were beaming their souls as brightly as the spotlights bouncing from his dolled up Latino peepers and into the emotional bodies of the audience. Uplifting, inspiring and educational: the musical comedy ICONS Vol. 2 takes the audience even deeper into queer history. Where ICONS Vol. 1 brought Ellen and Oscar Wilde to us, in ICONS Vol. 2 Jade asks the audience to make the journey to the characters. More subtle, thoughtful and mature than #1, the middle act of this trilogy is also more technically intricate. Billie Jean King plays a whole tennis match, Harvey Milk does a soft shoe dance for office at least a half dozen times and Mark Bingham sings us along on his wild 9/11 ride. Somehow Jade even manages to put Queen Christina's crown on the entire audience, bedazzling them all with the effervescent ballad "Unearth Me." Jade's show is so much more than song and dance, much more than history lessons in a wig. The (Christian) church, the White House and the bath house all have a place in the fluttering pages of Sappho's queer history chronology. I can only hope she shows up again to place a bookend on the series. ## Check out Jade's galleries by logging onto: www.getjaded.com www.iconsofhistory.com www.myspace.com/jadeinamerica From billnor at yahoo.com Mon Aug 7 21:15:13 2006 From: billnor at yahoo.com (Bill Northrup) Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2006 19:15:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [OutVoice] Playlist for Pride Showcase on RGIN for 8-07-06 Message-ID: <20060808021513.12918.qmail@web34410.mail.mud.yahoo.com> RGIN & Pride Showcase has moved from the Live365 server to a new server Loudcity. Without your support, this event could not be all that it is gearing up to be. HIV/AIDS does not discriminate. *Everyone* can get HIV/AIDS, men, women and children. There are currently over 42 million adults, and 2.3 million children living with HIV globally, these numbers are almost equivalent to the population of the states of Florida, New York and Georgia combined. During 2005, some 4.9 million people became infected with HIV, which causes AIDS. The year also saw 3.1 million deaths from AIDS. Future Projections of the extent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic cannot be made with any precision; what happens next will depend on *you*. I want to thank everyone involved in *Sing Out for AIDS* from the bottom of my heart for your ongoing support, and dedication. Without you this event could not be possible. Focus on the Family is benched by Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves... and other GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by JON BEAUPRE and TANYA KANE-PARRY). * Considering the volatile situation in the Middle East, it had to have been nothing less than remarkable that the JERUSALEM WORLD PRIDE FESTIVAL came off without any major problems this week. A Health Fair, Women's Day, and LGBT Youth Day each drew several hundred participants. A MULTI-FAITH RELIGIOUS CONFERENCE may have been something of a first, as lay people and clergy gathered at Hebrew Union College for several plenary sessions, speeches, and unique dialogue, while a concluding silent vigil at Jerusalem's Liberty Bell Park protesting anti-queer religious rhetoric and abuse replaced the planned Pride march. This report by This Way Out's GREG GORDON includes comments by RABBIS SHARON KLEINBAUM and AYELHE COHEN of New York City's Congregation Beth Simchat Torah; IRSHAD MANJI, the best-selling author of "The Trouble With Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith"; and NOA SATTAH of Jerusalem Open House, the major organizers of the week's events [www.worldpride.net]. * Pulitzer-nominated author TOM SPANBAUER is most widely known for his epic novel "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon." His latest work is the autobiographical story of a gay teenager growing up in a bigoted IDAHO farming town in the 1960's. This Way Out's BRYAN GOEBEL caught up with Spanbauer on the San Francisco leg of his book tour to talk about "NOW IS THE HOUR" (with Spanbauer reading excerpts, and music by SCOTT MACKENZIE and JIMI HENDRIX). ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Perhaps the only choral chamber piece ever written for a transsexual character, the composition received its world premiere in 1999 in San Francisco." - RU my full profile of Maupin is up at: http://www.afterelton.com __________________________________ I've had to cover many "gay" films released this summer at gay film fests. My fav of all i think is actually a foreign film - It's called GO WEST and is not just a "gay" film, but also a fascinating anti-war film - with music as one of its underlying themes. - I highly recommend this film. "Homosexuality and aesthetics act as metaphors for each other in Go West. Kenan as Milena resorts to playing his cello to try and maintain his sanity. His music, his art, his gay nature are clearly contrasted against all the war driven madness around him. Music is especially positioned as a lone civilizing element in a country falling apart." - RU my full review of GO WEST at: http://afterelton.com/movies/2006/7/gowest.html _________________________________________ by the by, I've also heard that composer Jake Heggie and lyricist Terrance McNally are at work on a new opera about MOBY DICK (!) ___________________________________________________ speaking of Maupin - I had the pleasure to meet and talk with NIGHT LISTENER star Toni Collette and director Patrick Stettner recently - my profile of them is at: http://afterelton.com/people/2006/8/collette.html _________________________________________________________ Robert Urban URBAN PRODUCTIONS, NYC www.roberturban.com ________________________________________________________________________ Check out AOL.com today. He?s performed in 33 countries and in seven different languages. His music has been heard on FX?s ?The Shield.? He was named the Funniest Amateur Comic in New York in 1994. He was even connected to Madonna?s lead dancer during her Blonde Ambition Tour. Now he?s the star of his one-man show titled ?ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 1,? portraying gay and lesbian characters throughout time. Watch out Ellen DeGeneres! ?I?m a history buff, because of my job I?m in constant contact with human rights activists all over the world,? said Estrada. ?So I?m going to hear a lot about Matthew Shepard [who was murdered in Laramie, Wyo. in an anti-gay crime]. I?m going to hear a lot about same-sex marriage. So I can?t help but think about the historical perspective.? Estrada?s show presents depictions of Michelangelo and Oscar Wilde to Gertrude Stein and DeGeneres through song, dance and perfect comedic timing. ?My shows have brought me closer to American history and American culture,? he added. Estrada isn?t a stranger to Jersey City Pride. He hosted the event in 2003 and 2004 and performed his ICONS 2 show in 2005. ?There are a couple of cities I keep coming back to,? said Estrada, ?Jersey City is one of the top ones.? Two international LGBT sporting events -- the seventh quadrennial GAY GAMES and the inaugural WORLD OUTGAMES -- were held in Chicago and Montr?al, respectively, in late July and early August. PAT HOGAN is on the Board of the Federation of Gay Games and also competed in Montr?al. She reflected on the seemingly-competing global sporting competitions, and looked to the future, during a chat with "This Way Out" correspondent HEATHER KITCHING [on CITR's "Queer FM"] [www.gaygames.com, www.glisa.org]. * With "BROTHERS OF THE HEAD," KEITH FULTON and LOUIS PEPE (the acclaimed directors of "Lost in La Mancha") present their much anticipated debut feature as writers/directors. A faux documentary about a band that never was, "Brothers of the Head" is the feverish, mind-bending odyssey of conjoined twins Barry and Tom Howe (played by real life twins HARRY and LUKE TREADAWAY) who are plucked from obscurity in the 1970's by a music promoter and groomed into a bizarre boy band. Grappling with impossible love, artistic rivalry, and a dark inner life, the twins embrace their freakishness and spit it back in the form of searing punk rock. "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE chats with collaborative "out" couple Fulton and Pepe, and with the film's starring twin Treadaways (with music from the film, "2-Way Romeo" and "My Friend," performed by Harry & Luke Treadaway as "Barry & Tom Howe") [www.brothersofthehead.com, www.prideonscreen.com]. ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Recent years have been politically problematic for the community, with the gay marriage issue used as an electoral wedge. Despite that, the comic, singer, dancer and actor NBC News has called "America's Prince of Pride" sees a positive change in public attitudes. And, he said, that change has allowed young gays to lead easier lives than those who lived alternative lifestyles in previous generations. Estrada, who headlines this week's Pride in the 'Burg festival in Fredericksburg, has appeared on Comedy Central's "The Graham Norton Effect" and on the PBS series "In the Life," and his music has been included on the soundtrack of the TV show "The Shield." Pride festivals are held annually in cities around the world--some on the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots spurred by a police raid of a Greenwich Village gay bar. The reaction to that raid is considered by many to have been the beginning of the gay liberation movement. This week's event features music, comedy, worship, food and more. Estrada told The Free Lance-Star in a telephone interview from San Antonio, Texas, where he's working on the film "The Bad Singer," that he believes fewer young gay people are forced to grow up with adversity and identity problems related to their sexuality. Because of that, he contended, Pride events such as the one in Fredericksburg this week have become more about celebrating diversity than making a political statement. Estrada described a "post-gay" phenomenon he said is similar to one in which young female professionals don't spend much time thinking about their mothers' and grandmothers' struggle for equal rights. This will be the 183rd Pride festival Estrada has appeared at across the country over the past five years. And he's spoken on many college campuses, he said. Based on those experiences, he believes young gays and lesbians are "approaching equality from the different angle of the 21st-century experience." Estrada credited what he called an "open dialogue about homosexuality over the past 50 years" with making life easier for this generation of gays and lesbians. He cited Mary Cheney, the daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, as an example of a "post-gay." He plays her in his solo series of musicals, "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World." He also portrays Alexander the Great, Billie Jean King, Susan B. Anthony, Sept. 11 hero Mark Bingham, Oscar Wilde, Michelangelo, King James, Gertrude Stein and others. "People ask, 'Why Mary Cheney--what has she ever done for the gay community?'" Estrada said. Some gays and lesbians have criticized her for not speaking out. But, Estrada said, "Why should she be forced to join the march? Mary Cheney to me is a beautiful example of post-gay," he said, "although her reasons might be a little different from others." He said of post-gays: "They have loving and accepting friends and family. They don't have to spend all their time being gay--it's not something that identifies them." He acknowledged that attitudes can vary around the country. "Sometimes I go to a city or a campus and I think, 'Wow, have you guys been [paying attention]?' But it doesn't happen a lot. Obviously, there's going to be a huge difference in smaller cities." Estrada's early days in show business included acting as a choreographer for "cuchi-cuchi girl" Charo and as a scratch singer for the Backstreet Boys--meaning he recorded sample tracks so the band could decide what songs it wanted to perform. He'll do his "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 1" at 9 p.m. Friday, at the Colonial Tavern, Home to the Irish Brigade. Tickets are $30. Then he'll headline Pride in the 'Burg at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, with a free performance on the festival's main stage at Sophia and Charlotte streets in downtown Fredericksburg. Other highlights of Pride in the 'Burg include: l Suzanne Moe's film, "A Love Story in the Face of Hate," Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library at 1201 Caroline St. Barbara Kenny and Tibby Middleton, who are the subjects of the film, will appear. l Main-stage acts at Saturday's street festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the main stage at Sophia Street between Wolfe and Charlotte streets, will include Estrada, the Christian pop duo Jason and DeMarco, comedian Vickie Shaw, the Gadget White Band, Roddy Barnes, Derek and Romaine, and Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women. l Pride Ride V on the City of Fredericksburg paddleboat boards at the City Dock on Sunday, leaving at noon and ending at 4 p.m. The ride will feature "Gilligan's Island Revisited" with Andra Faye and The Mighty Good Men, and John and Mary Vreeland. Tickets are $50 and are available at Caroline Street Cafe, Feast-O-Rama, Corky's, Sammy T's and Pinnacle. Katrina blew ashore Aug. 29, 2005. While Southern Decadence was canceled?? ?except for about a dozen renegade partiers who marched through the French Quarter exactly one week after the storm???and many gay residents were forced to flee their homes, New Orleans? gay neighborhoods miraculously dodged much of the devastation. The catastrophic hurricane bruised homes and businesses located in high-lying neighborhoods like the French Quarter, Bywater and Uptown, but those heavily gay areas were spared the flooding that transformed most of New Orleans. ?All the touristy things are 100 percent intact, but half the city is still desolate,? said Roberts Batson, a longtime gay rights activist and historian in New Orleans. ?Gay people are really taking the lead in coming back to New Orleans.? Batson grabbed the last seat on one of the last three flights out of the city before Katrina hit, then returned three weeks later to find his 1840s home outside the French Quarter still standing, the padlock on his door cut off by a military crew searching for dead bodies. ?I didn?t lose my house and I was very fortunate in many ways, but it?s still very difficult and very sad,? Batson said. ?We all cry at the drop of a hat? ??that?s how emotions are, and that?s going to happen for a long time. Batson reflected on his fear of returning home and finding that his 10 years worth of research on New Orleans?s gay history was destroyed by floodwater or fire, but paused in the middle of his story to fight back tears. ?I?m sorry???it still happens,? he said. ?I was so grateful the house was here and the things I value were OK. But it?s not over???we?ll always have these emotional scars.? Gay party returns Batson and other gay residents are preparing to apply some New Orleans-style ointment on those scars, as Southern Decadence returns to town Aug. 30 through Sept. 4. A group of friends who Batson affectionately calls ?leftover hippies? started the annual event in 1972 by throwing a costume party, and inviting everyone to come as their ?favorite Southern Decadent.? To garner more attention for their elaborate outfits, the costumed group walked to the French Quarter in 1975, laying the foundation for what would become an annual string of parties, booze and, yes, decadence. The loss of Southern Decadence last year compounded the difficult circumstances for gay businesses damaged during Katrina. ?It became for our bars and many of our gay retail businesses their top draw financially for the year, so it?s very important to see it return,? Batson said. The round-the-clock buffet of parties that comprise Southern Decadence will be fully stocked this year, with entertainers like Inaya Day, Pepper Mashay and native DJ Joe Gauthreaux looking to bring the beat back to New Orleans. Some gay groups are also looking to add high culture and historical perspective to the annual revelry by launching DecaFest, which occurs simultaneously to Southern Decadence. ?We?re not in competition with Decadence, we?re not trying to change Decadence, we?re just trying to add to it,? said Batson, one of the organizers of DecaFest, which features a half-dozen themed historical tours, symposiums and the New Orleans gay and lesbian film festival, which was also canceled last year. DecaFest also unveils ?Love, Bourbon Street: A Celebration of Gay New Orleans, ? a new anthology from Alyson Books that features gay and lesbian writers reflecting on New Orleans, both before and after Hurricane Katrina. One of the headline events will be an airing of ?ICONS: The Lesbian & Gay History of the World, Vol. 1,? with a discussion with the show?s star, Jade Esteban Estrada, following the screening. >From now on, Southern Decadence and the anniversary of Katrina will fall within days of each other, and some say it?s emotionally turbulent planning such a big party while also marking the storm?s milestone. ?It?s shaping up to be fabulous, but of course it can be very hard sometimes too,? said Marcell, who is a manager at the bar Le Roundup, one of the first gay businesses to reopen in New Orleans post-Katrina. ?We really need it. We need it???we need the tourists.? Katrina is sure to cast a shadow over the Gulf Coast as the media and others mark the one-year anniversary of the storm, but Batson promised Southern Decadence and DecaFest won?t be bleak affairs. ?It?s not a memorial???it?s not to look back on what has been, but to look forward to what can be,? Batson said. ?A lot of gay people [from New Orleans] who have not returned are coming to Decadence.? ? Community comes together The concept for DecaFest sprouted from one of the hidden positives Katrina brought to New Orleans: a collaboration among queers known as the Community Coalition of Greater New Orleans GLBTQ Organizations & Businesses. ?Since the storm, a group of us have been meeting to say, ?What can we do to build the community back together,?? Batson said. ?I am very heartened by [the unity among gay businesses and organizations]. We really need to take care of each other, because we?re all still suffering this.? The Community Coalition is also rallying help for organizations like the No AIDS Task Force of New Orleans and the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of New Orleans, both of which have struggled with the loss of their primary donor and fundraising base. Unprecedented levels of corporate contributions and grants from foundations to the No AIDS Task Force ?has been the lifeblood that?s keeping the agency open over the last couple of months,? said Executive Director Noel Twilbeck. ?At the same time, I know some supporters of the agency who have lost their homes and their jobs, and they?re still supporting the agency???it?s so admirable,? he said. The number of clients the No AIDS Task Force serves is down from about 1,200 before the storm to 700 people, and the agency has experienced about 50 percent turnover among staff. A small electrical fire also caused the organization to abandon its building in June, and it continues to operate out of makeshift medical stations and portable offices, Twilbeck said. Heavily gay areas in New Orleans may be back to a vibrant state, but the hearts and minds of gay and lesbian residents continue to be clouded by the residual devastation Katrina left behind, said Rev. Dexter Brecht, pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater New Orleans. ?The most challenging thing for me as a pastor has been the emotional trauma that?s been caused by the storm,? Brecht said. ?It?s been hard for some people to cope with the fact that the city???and their lives, their everyday lives? ??is not the same as it was. ?I?ve spent more time dealing with mental health issues since I returned after the storm than I ever did in my entire career,? Brecht continued, adding that ?nearly everyone? he knows has suffered some type of post-traumatic stress. New Orleans is ?a city of wounded people,? Batson said. When Le Roundup opened its doors in late October, Marcell described the city as ?eerie in a way, but kind of safe in another way???it?s hard to explain.? Random fires were continuing to erupt around the mostly still city, but the ubiquitous National Guard provided a sense of security amid the chaos, Marcell said. ?It was pleasant,? she remembered about the time the first customers returned to Le Roundup. ?Everybody, of course, was still in shock???trading stories about how they survived, where they went, how they evacuated and all of that.? Unaware of the storm?s eventual course, Brecht evacuated to a small town in north Mississippi, where he stayed for five days before feeling a need to get as close as he could to his hometown. The sight he witnessed when arriving in New Orleans a month after Katrina hit was ?awesome.? ?And I don?t mean that in a wonderful way,? Brecht said. ?Just the sheer reality of how much damage had been done was almost to the point of overwhelming. ? Brecht?s stunned feelings soon gave way to an optimism that even he found surprising. ?I thought, ?Look at this blank slate we?ve been given,?? said Brecht, envisioning a New Orleans free of racism, classism, homophobia, a poor education system and crime. ?That opportunity still exists, but the door is closing on that opportunity and some of those systemic problems are returning.? Nigeria's House of Representatives plans public hearings on what international rights groups describe as the most oppressive anti-lesbigay legislation on the planet, while queer activists in Uganda condemn the publication of alleged homosexuals in the "Red Pepper" tabloid newspaper... what may be Nepal's first public gay wedding is held in Kathmandu as queer activists in the Himalayan nation demand representation in upcoming elections and a voice in crafting the proposed new charter of rights... Stockholm Pride sets new records as a Swedish parliamentary committee urges an upgrade of the nation's "civil partnerships" to legal marriage; about a sixth of Iceland's population take part in Reykjavik's two-day Pride festival, while the country's parliament modifies laws on registered cohabitation to extend virtually all the rights of marriage to same gender couples... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported by KAREEM FERGUSON and RICK WATTS). * The always outspoken AUSTRALIAN HIGH COURT JUSTICE MICHAEL KIRBY has been stepping on toes again in the past couple of weeks. Kirby, who was appointed to the Court in 1996, told a group of Sydney law students on August 23rd that Australia's jurisprudence was lagging behind the rest of the world because of its failure to see domestic law in the context of international law. In a speech to queer activists just days before that, Kirby was critical of the homophobic religious right, but also chastised LGBT organizations for not cultivating stronger political ties and media presence. That all-important visibility was also on the judge's mind when he spoke at a BRISBANE Pride forum called "A Celebration of Achievements." Publicly gay since 1999, Justice Kirby was emphatic about the role of visibility in combating bigotry, but compassionate about the personal nature of each individual act of coming out (recorded by "This Way Out" correspondent JOHN FRAME). * Their current work could not be more personal, but the three solo artists featured in this month's "AUDIOFILE" are here because they succeed in touching something universal (excerpts from "Soft Side" and "Who's Your Angel" from LIZ CLARK's "HAND ON THE STOVE"); ("Joy" and the title cut from BRIAN LANE GREEN's "WAITING FOR THE GLACIERS TO MELT"); ("Taking Care of Me" and the title cut from JOSH ZUCKERMAN's "OUT FROM UNDER") (with comments by each artist, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE, and written & produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM/www.audiofile.org). = artist contact info = LIZ CLARK BRIAN LANE GREEN JOSH ZUCKERMAN RJOrich13 at aol.com Tru2frm at aol.com sasipr at aol.com www.lizclarkmusic.com www.brianlanegreen.com www.joshzuckerman.com ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). It has been a long time since B.E. have released any new material, but to celebrate my 30th year as an Out musician, a milestone recognised last year with a Special Recognition OMA Award- I am in the process of recording three new cds. One is the first all original, new Boys' Entrance songs since,1998's, "The Queer Punk Folder". The second is a response to the requests of many fans who "love" our instrumentals. It is a compillation of old and new instrumentals by Boys' Entrance. Finally, we are also going to relase our version of the Bowie, "Pin Ups" album- a collection of queer covers: "Lola" by the Kinks, "Dude Looks Like A Lady" by Aerosmith, "Queen Bitch" by Bowie, "Fem In A Black Leather Jacket" by Pansy Division, and much, much more. Lots o' Fun!!! We are recording with producer, Timmy Samuel of The Nancys. Timmy played drums on "The Queer Punk Folder", recorded, "Flash" and "Jon-Henri Damski (Queer Thinker, Queer Thoughts)", and even directed the video for that release too! (JHD will be released on the new BE originals cd and the video will finally be released, as well.) He has been a terrific friend and collaborator of Boys' Entrance and we thank him. For those of you who are unfamilliar with Boys' Entrance's "Enoesque, Synth/Glam, Homocore" blend of styles, cds are available through CD Baby, and are available through downloads from 50+ services on the net like: iTunes, Rhapsody, Musicmatch, etc. You B.E. Rubberlegs is three musically codependent friends who collectively crave daily timereleased doses of electro rock with a punk-slash-experimental edge and quirky fun offbeat pop songs. Originally described as "the wackiest electronic duo since the Flying Lizards," Rubberlegs owes its new musical existence to Outmusic - especially to Carol Kassel and Corinne Curcio, who spurred Peg and Bun to start honing their live show in 2001, following two Top 5 hits on MP3.com's New Wave chart. ... Their new 2006 release "The Timinator" was nominated for an OUTMUSIC Award, for "Outstanding New Recording by a Duo or Group." Rubberlegs is BACK to plug the proletariat with their Kevlar-piercing waveforms. It was sort of like ammunition against all those people who said, 'Jeez, the music business is really tough, etc?' I could say, 'Look what I did. The NC Songwriter's Co-op has chosen me as the best songwriter in a place full of great songwriters. People are talking about me, talking about my show. I can do this.' And I do. Message-ID: <265.f86aa80.32275174@aol.com> Gee, now I'm a published author....:) A few months ago I was very pleased to be contacted by the editor of a special issue of the Journal of Popular Music Studies (Boston University). He asked me to contribute an article for the journal for an issue on queer popular music. My subject was "Queer Music Radio: Entertainment, Education, and Activism" I've got it on my site to check out, at http://www.queermusicheritage.com/features2.html JD Doyle my "Queer Music Heritage" radio show site: http://www.queermusicheritage.com my Outradio site: http://www.outradio.com and co-producer of Audiofile, the monthly radio review of CDs of interest to the GLBT communities, airing on over 150 stations around the world on This Way Out. I hate censorship. However, I dont want DJ's of radio shows, to have the extra hassle of having to worry about not playing one my songs because they may get fined for my use of the word Fuck in a direct quotation of a friend in a story song. Although the use of the word is integral to the plotline, it wont lose it's impact if it is bleeped out, as the listenener will know what its supposed to be. I'd rather not do this, but if it will present a problem for radio programmers, as I said, it can be done without changing the meaning. I ship the masters off to be manufactured in a few days and I am considering bleeping out the word. The question is this, How MUCH of the word needs to be bleeped out ? The only information I could find online, is that the FCC does not actually have a list of banned words and everything is contextual. Do any of you radio people have any thoughts on this or know what is acceptable and not acceptable? Would you play a song with a bleeped Fuck in it, have things changed, can you now play it unbleeped? Just looking for some feedback from Y'all Freddy Freeman Singer Songwriter Founder of Bearapalooza BREAK THE SILENCE - December2006 www.freddyfreeman.com From Jddoyle1 at aol.com Thu Aug 31 16:24:29 2006 From: Jddoyle1 at aol.com (Jddoyle1 at aol.com) Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2006 17:24:29 EDT Subject: [OutVoice] FCC Bleeping Message-ID: <3fc.13fdbe3.3228ad8d@aol.com> In a message dated 8/31/2006 11:17:16 AM Central Standard Time, freddy at freddyfreeman.com writes: Do any of you radio people have any thoughts on this or know what is acceptable and not acceptable? A couple of years ago I did several internet-only shows (my own way of protesting) and I included a page on the FCC guidelines, as compiled by a Pacifica lawyer and presented to us at a meeting. It's at.... http://www.queermusicheritage.com/fccrules.html Yes, we can play a song with the word completely bleeped, though I personally find that very distracting and annoying. Another appoach is to just cut the volume for that word, a bit less noticeable. Both are hard to do "on the fly." I would never chance it, and I'd want to use an editing program and then burn a disc of that song to take to the station. I did that recently with one of Kris Landherr's songs. I readily admit, I'm a busy guy and I have to REALLY like a song before I would go to that trouble. I'm betting you don't want to gamble airplay on a producer's willingness to try to censor your song. Not all songs can be successfully "bleeped" without ruining the impact or rhythm. For example, Saturn has a wonderful song, "I Luv Everything About You," that I was not able to doctor in a suitable way, so regrettably I just can't play it. I know money is important to an indy artist, but I often wonder if you have that dynamite radio-almost-ready song and you don't want to censor it, if you could record two versions of it, and have both on your CD, giving those who program for "regular" radio an option. Substitute a safe euphemism perhaps....."messin' around" for "fuckin' around" or whatever. Or even have a radio-safe version ready to email upon request as an mp3. I did play one song on the air that had four letter words and just cut the volume, as JD suggested. It's hard though and like him, I had to really like the song. I don't know if I would play a bleeped version. I'd be paranoid about using the right version. One of my own songs has a few four letter words. I've tried singing with substitutions but really, it just doesn't have the same impact. When I record this song I'll simply include a note to DJs that says it has the word and they won't play it. There'll be 12 other songs they can play so I'm not worried. Damn FCC. None of this should matter.
