The week of 04/24/06 on
T H I S W A Y O U T
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
Belgium equalizes adoptions but Massachusetts ignores Church bias, Italy's
new P.M. promises civil partnerships, 9 Cameroonians are sprung from 11-
month "homosexual" imprisonment, rights groups expose anti-gay Iranian and
Iraqi pogroms, cops nab one possible perp in St. Maarten bashing, more news;
The death and legacy of the "Broken Heart of Ireland" Sir Roger Casement;
and N.Y. energy, FLA. freedom and S.F. survival rock the "Audiofile"
*In "NewsWrap": Belgium passes legislation to extend adoption rights to same
gender couples equal to their heterosexual counterparts, but Roman Catholic
adoption agencies in Massachusetts are being allowed to reject prospective queer
parents even though that's a clear violation of the U.S. state's anti-bias
laws... Romano Prodi, who promised to enact civil partnership legislation if
elected Prime Minister, is officially declared the winner in last week's
contested national elections in Italy... 9 men held for almost a year on charges of
homosexuality are acquitted and released following a quick trial in Cameroon...
a new investigative report documents government-sanctioned executions of gay
and bisexual men based on trumped-up charges in the Islamic Republic of Iran
and urges other countries to not deport queer Iranian refugees, while the
International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission calls on the U.S. government
to stop religious fundamentalist-fueled violence against and killings of gay
men in war-torn Iraq... the execution-style murders of 2 well-known gay men in
Cape Town, South Africa has the queer community on edge, while one suspect in
the brutal anti-gay attack against 2 American men in the Caribbean island of
St. Maarten is in custody, with more arrests expected... and more GLBT news from
around the world (written this week by GREG GORDON and reported by RICK WATTS
and KATHY SANCHEZ).
* Homosexuality was considered an illness early in the 20th century when gay
humanitarian and controversial Irish patriot SIR ROGER CASEMENT was
enthusiastically recording the intimate details of his sexual escapades in several
personal diaries. Despite the exemplary human rights work on two continents that
got him knighted, his advocacy for an independent Ireland led to his being put
on trial - in Britain - for treason. In the conclusion of this special 4-part
bio-drama written and produced by HUGH YOUNG and narrated by BARRY EMPSON,
the publication of Casement's scandalous diaries about loving "our kind" seal
the fate of "THE BROKEN HEART OF IRELAND".
* Rollin' out of Broadway (excerpts from the title cut and "Mr. Curious" from
"DOLL" by KEVIN CAHOON AND GHETTO COWBOY), power-rockin' bliss ("Yea" and the
title cut from "CRY MERCY" by LINDA NUNEZ), and "broken" band members forming
"a new" ("Him For Me" and "P.S." from "DEAR JOHN" by EX-BOYFRIENDS) shake up
this month's "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by the artists about their music,
hosted this month by JD DOYLE & PAM MARSHALL and written & produced with CHRIS
WILSON & CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM/www.audiofile.org).
