John Howard's federal government, which can and says it will overrule the measure... a landmark Pretoria High Court ruling makes a South African gay man the sole heir to his late partner's estate... the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court upholds an antiquated law which bans an out-of-state couple from marrying there if the marriage would not be legally recognized in the couple's home state... a Maryland trial court overturns a Virginia child custody ruling that had prevented a young boy from living under the same roof with his gay dad and his dad's male partner... it's revealed that Canadian Christian peace activist James Loney, rescued last week from 4 months of captivity as a hostage in Iraq, is a gay man... a kennel owner in Sweden is fined for refusing to sell a puppy to a lesbian... and other GLBT news from around the world (written this week by GREG GORDON, and reported by CHARLS HALL and GREG GORDON). * The gasps of surprise could be heard all over the sports world when pro football player ESERA TUAOLO added his name to the very short list of professional male athletes who have publicly come out. Tuaolo is telling his own story in the recently released "ALONE IN THE TRENCHES: MY LIFE AS A GAY MAN IN THE NFL." He chatted with This Way Out correspondent ABIGAIL GARNER [www.AbigailGarner.net] about the pressures of secrecy and his relief at coming out [www.EseraTuaolo.com] (with thanks to ANN McNALLY for production assistance). * Humanitarian and infamous Irish patriot SIR ROGER CASEMENT was such a controversial figure in his country's history that the arguments about his sexual orientation raged for almost 90 years after his death in 1916 -- but we don't want to get ahead of the story! Casement's fascinating life has been dramatized by writer/producer HUGH YOUNG in "THE BROKEN HEART OF IRELAND," narrated by BARRY EMPSON. Their four-part biography begins this week with an exploration of Casement's roots and his introduction to the African continent, with which he would forever be linked. ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). The June 1969 raid by police on a gay gathering place called the Stonewall Inn triggered a spasm of violent protest and conflict between New York's gay community and police officers. The clashes marked the beginning of the Gay Liberation Movement, in which decades of anger and outrage at police harassment and brutality found a public outlet. Most Pride festivities commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall riots take place during the last week of June. But in Florida, the occasion is usually celebrated in the springtime, when the weather is glorious and university students haven't scattered for the summer. The local lesbian, gay and transgender community bursts into bloom this weekend for Tallahassee PrideFest 2006. The festivities commence with a performance by the sumptuously entertaining Latin pop singer/comedian/cross-dressing historical interpreter Jade Esteban Estrada tonight at the downtown hotspot Paradigm. Estrada packed the house last year for a performance of his "ICONS: The Lesbian & Gay History of the World, Vol. 1" at Paradigm. That means you'd better get there early to stake out a prime spot for tonight's "ICONS: The Lesbian & Gay History of the World, Vol. 2." In the first edition of Estrada's absolutely fabulous interpretation of world history, he delivered hysterical portrayals of such historical and cultural figures as Sappho, Michelangelo, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein and Ellen DeGeneres. In "Vol. 2," he puts his special spin on such characters as Queen Christina of Sweden, Billie Jean King, Susan B. Anthony, Harvey Milk, Alexander the Great and 9/11 hero Mark Bingham. Estrada previously worked as lead dancer for the campy legend Charo and has tickled funny bones aplenty on Comedy Central's "The Graham Norton Effect." His original Latin dance music has been used on the soundtrack of the police drama "The Shield," and he has appeared on the PBS series "In the Life." Estrada will preside over the PrideFest activities at Tom Brown Park on Saturday. There'll be a special Kids Zone for the youngsters, a Doggie Station and a variety of food, crafts and service vendors and exhibitors. The day wouldn't be complete without live music to make the crowd strut and shimmy. The PrideFest lineup includes Ravens Gate at 11:30 a.m., Nunez at 12:45 p.m., The Grand Canyons at 2, Kristi Lee at 3:15 and South Florida recording artist the Diane Ward Band at 4:30. Cameroon jails another tabloid publisher for defamation over the lists of alleged homosexuals that appeared earlier this year in his "Nouvelle Afrique" newspaper... "Brokeback Mountain" is banned from movie screens in the Bahamas, but global retail giant Wal-Mart resists religious right pressure and is selling the new DVD release of the Oscar-winning film... and more GLBT news from around the world (written this week by GREG GORDON and reported by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and LUCIA CHAPPELLE). * Stories about attacks on GLBT people around the world are sadly routine. This week alone, a mob at the University of West Indies campus in JAMAICA chased down and hurled rocks at a man perceived to be gay -- police believe only their intervention saved his life, and a senior news producer for the U.S. CBS-TV network and a colleague were beaten with a wheel wrench or metal pipe on the Caribbean island of ST. MAARTEN by 4 men and 2 women who reportedly called themselves "gay bashers." And the men most responsible for last year's brutal beating of two gay men in SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO got what amounted to a preliminary slap-on-the-wrist this week from a state district judge. As JIM WILLIAMS of KUNM-FM reports, while New Mexico passed a hate crimes statute in 2003, some of the young men involved in the attack may not see any real prison time at all (includes courtroom comments by the most viciously attacked victim JAMES MAESTAS and his mother GERRIE; victim Joshua STOCKHAM?s mother CHERYL; one of the defendants, DAVID TRINIDAD; CARLA C de BACA, a neighbor of another defendant; and post-hearing analysis by ANN BADWAY, co-counsel for the New Mexico Attorney General?s office, which helped prosecute the case). * Last time on "This Way Out" we began the story of early 20th century gay humanitarian and controversial Irish patriot SIR ROGER CASEMENT. The first part of the dramatized biography by producer HUGH YOUNG and narrator BARRY EMPSON described Casement's roots in both Irish Catholic and Protestant households, and how family, friends and associates portrayed him as an exceedingly charming and adventurous young man. Hopping a ship to Africa, Casement would eventually work for the British Foreign Office, winning acclaim for exposing the brutality of King Leopold's rubber-trading operation in what was then the Belgian Congo. As his story continues, we sample entries from Casement's notorious so-called "Black Diaries" and hear how saving forced native laborers in the Amazon from brutal rubber-producers got him knighted. ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Message-ID: <23691b95752e4ad1b731c267779013a8@freddyfreeman.com> Hi everyone, I am looking to put together a backing band for myself, Michael West and possibly a couple of songs for Yolanda for Bearapalooza. I dont have the budget to really pay, but if someone really needed expenses covered, it is negotiable. I will work with the right people and pay what I can. It's a great gig at a great venue in Nashville called 3rd and Lindsley. If any of you know anyone in the Nashville area who might be interested in joining us, I would appreciate any leads you could offer. I am looking for a drummer, bass player and electric guitarist, and possibly keyboards. I would also be happy to add harmonica, mandolin or fiddle if there is anyone that plays them. The club has all the equipment except guitar & bass amps, and keyboards. I can rent them if needed. They have drums, mics, DI's, monitors etc. I would need the players to learn the songs from recordings and be available for a few rehearsals in June and July. I have a preference for gay musicians, in the bear community is even better, but its not a requirement. Polish queers and progressives lose their battle to keep a gay club open in Warsaw, but about 400 people march in the third Pride parade in Phnom Penh, Cambodia... Kentucky's governor rescinds lesbigay anti-bias state workplace protections... and other GLBT news from around the world (written this week by GREG GORDON, and reported by SHERI LUNN and JON BEAUPRE). * In a new report called "FALSE PROMISES: HOW THE RIGHT DEPLOYS HOMOPHOBIA TO WIN SUPPORT FROM AFRICAN-AMERICANS," the NATIONAL GAY AND LESBIAN TASK FORCE POLICY INSTITUTE charges that the Republican Party's efforts to win Black votes are fundamentally disingenuous. Task Force Policy analyst NICHOLAS RAY explains how the data from several African-American organizations and polling groups was used to develop the report's conclusions... the outspoken REVEREND DOCTOR YVETTE FLUNDER is Presiding Bishop of REFUGE MINISTRIES, a San Francisco inner city-based church founded in the "Baptist, Methodist and Pentacostal traditions," and she issues a clarion call for African-American communities to begin a discourse about sexuality... and the kind of research the Task Force has done is long overdue as far as NATIONAL BLACK JUSTICE COALITION Executive Director ALEXANDER ROBINSON is concerned [www.thetaskforce.org; www.sfrefuge.org; www.nbjcoalition.org]. * In the first two parts of our 4-part dramatized biography of early 20th century gay humanitarian and controversial Irish patriot SIR ROGER CASEMENT, we've heard about his dual roots in Irish Catholic and Protestant households and his exceedingly charming and adventurous nature. As an agent for the British Foreign Office, Casement investigated and reported on the brutality of King Leopold's rubber-trading operation in what was then the BELGIAN CONGO -- all the while detailing his sexual escapades in diaries that would ultimately come back to haunt him. After receiving considerable public accolades for the reforms his work forced in Africa, he was next sent to South America, where he encountered unscrupulous rubber-traders along the AMAZON and their equally horrific treatment of forced Native laborers. His reports to the Foreign Office were so strong that just the threat of their publication moved the Peruvian government to institute changes. Casement was knighted for his efforts, and while he accepted the honor, he felt a traitor to Ireland. He devoted more and more of his energies to the Home Rule movement, speaking out for a unified and independent Ireland. Producer HUGH YOUNG and narrator BARRY EMPSON continue his story in Part 3 of "THE BROKEN HEART OF IRELAND: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SIR ROGER CASEMENT". ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Fantastic, I love your cover of that! We just released a cover, and it was quite the process of discovery, beginning just about a year ago! CD Baby is not telling you the whole story, they just want to make sure that you do the legally required notification to the publisher. You are guaranteed permission to release a cover (the license is "compulsory", meaning the publisher must allow it, provided you don't significantly alter the song, lyrics, etc.) if you follow the proper notification procedure. However, you still must also pay the mechanical license fees. For that, start by going to Harry Fox Agency's web site, http://www.harryfox.com, and see if they represent the artist -- do a Songfile search. If they do, then it's a piece of cake, you just pay the mechanical license fee up front and you're good to go! Unfortunately, our cover (Lawnchairs) is not represented there. We were able to find the song, registration ID and publishing info on ASCAP's site, but the address they had for the publisher was years out of date, and our letter bounced back. Eventually, after many tortuous months, someone suggested we send our letter to the publisher c/o ASCAP's address. Within days I got an e-mail from Scott, the copyright owner, giving us permission. I do need to send him a regular statement of income (there hasn't really been any, not yet) and a check, per CD Baby's instructions. We will follow Harry Fox's guidelines to determine the percentage of sales that Scott gets. I'm hoping our next cover is on Songfile, and that will make everything easier! Good luck Freddy! Openly gay musician/producer ROBERT URBAN of URBAN PRODUCTIONS, NYC will speak at the Hartford, Connecticut TRINITY COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL HIP-HOP FESTIVAL on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 1pm - www.trinityhiphop.org. WHEN/WHERE: Saturday April 22 - 1:00pm Presentation - "The International Homo Hip-Hop Scene: Popular GLBT Rap Artists Worldwide", by Robert Urban - RITTENBURG LOUNGE, Mather Hall, Trinity College - http://www.trinityhiphop.org/speakers.htm _________________________________ Through a weekend celebration of diverse music, dance, film, and spoken word traditions, The Trinity College International Hip Hop Festival seeks to bring Trinity closer to the community around it. Hartford is an international city. It is home to large Puerto Rican, Brazilian, Cape Verdean, and West Indian communities. Hartford is also home to large African refugee/immigrant communities, specifically from Somalia and Ethiopia. With the help of Trinity?s African Studies department, Music department, Human Rights Program, Tutorial College, and Modern Language department, and many other generous supporters this conference will be a free large-scale event, open to the entire Hartford community and greater New England area. A three-day event, the festival boasts a line up of performers from Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Haiti, India, Mexico, Iraq, Korea, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Australia, France, Uganda, and more. Performances will be in over seven different languages: Spanish, Swahili, and Portuguese among them. Several award- winning documentaries will be presented and screened by their directors. The conference will also include lecturers and artists leading discussions about the global phenomenon that is hip hop music and culture and the role hip hop plays in increasing social and political awareness and uniting communities ________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS OF PRESENTATION: Speaking from his many years experience as a musician, sound engineer, producer and music reviewer who has worked with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered hip-hop artists; Robert Urban will present this conference paper to bear witness to the high artistic content and genuine "hip-hop" credentials of gay male rappers worldwide. They are part of a vibrant, growing GLBT hip hop scene, complete with it's own loyal fan base, live performance venues, tours & festivals, GLBT owned record labels, CD distribution networks and record buying audience. Robert will also use music excerpts from the lives and works of "out" gay rap stars to let gay rap speak foritself. These popular queer artists from all over the U.S. are important social critics and observers of not just their own GLBT culture and establishment, but also of mainstream society as a whole. Via the words of these brave & creative performers, hot-button social topics such as gay rights, white/black relationships, inner city ghetto poverty, anti-gay discrimination, romance and masculinity issues, homoeroticism, gay/straight conflicts and black on black violence are illuminated. Additional insights into gay hip hop are revealed in the new film about today's artistically groundbreaking new Harlem Ball scene - "How Do I Look?" _______________________________ ROBERT URBAN/URBAN PRODUCTIONS - Born and raised in Fairfield, CT,this award-winning queer rock artist, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and published literary writer is also owner/operator of the NYC-based URBAN PRODUCTIONS recording studio and music creation facility. Ouch. The only reason YOU THINK she might not like it is if YOU THINK she'll think you're not good enough. Do I detect a whiff of "will that person "have negative feelings" if I come out?" WRONG ATTITUDE! Pick the song, do it up PROUD, pay the royalties, and let the karma chips (which I bet will be mostly good) fall where they may. It never crossed my mind for a second to consider whether they would "be okay" with an out musician covering their song. > How do you handle the sales of subsequent cd's? As John-Frederick mentioned, I'll get the infor from ASCAP; it might be 8% of a 12-song CD. Cheers, bros! Why seek approval? Besides, if you merely "inform" her about something she has no control over, what good is that, sounds irritating to me. And you can't "ask" her because she has no right to refuse. Seattle's coach is Mike Holmgren and Michael Vick plays for Atlanta, so it's not a surprise. They used it for 15 seconds of "background" music. They never asked me, they just used it and paid -- cut & dried business. So that's what we should do (though I would have thought it would net more than $9!!!) The manufacturers will not do the run if you dont have that documentation. Then you are done with fees unless you decide to do another run of CDs later. You pay for each CD manufactured regardless of whether you sell it or give it as promo. There may be a minimum, of this Im not sure, but perhaps if you create less than 300 you dont have the fee. Really eveything can be found at Harry Fox Agency website or your manufacturer. Roger is having his CD release party/show tomorrow - Saturday night in NYC, and I'll be dashing back from my Hartford, CT gig to sit in on some tunes with him - For those who've only heard Roger in the minimal musical setting of solo vocal/acoustic guitar, you are in for quite the surprise treat with "PROOF". You'll hear his voice shine thoughout a wide variety of song arrangements - from all-out electric power rock to orchestrated strings to multi-layered vocal choruses to sweet country/gospel to stark acoustic folk to pure a cappella. For my part, Roger's songwriting, lyrics, voice, rhythmic groove, musicianship and positive spirit were of great inspiration to me in producing this wondrous 11 song album. PROOF's totally rockin' opening track - "What's Your Name?" is, hands down, the best thing I've done since Scott Free's "The Muffin Song". Flying all the way in from Wyoming to perform with Roger at the NYC PROOF release party this Saturday will be the indescribably delicious, sweet-voiced James Erickson. When James & Roger sing together it's like hearing angels. James's contribution on PROOF was especially magical. Originally scheduled to sing duet on one of Roger's original tunes, James & Roger began the session by warming up their voices - casually harmonizing an a cappella rendition of Melissa Etheridge's "Sleep While I Drive". It sounded so damn good - I quickly set up a vocal mic, asked them to start over, turned off the lights in the control room, lit some candles - and the rest is history. Sung in one impromptu single take - their a cappella "You Can Sleep While I Drive" cover was a total keeper and is one of the singular standouts of the album. Luckily, I also had my camera handy at the recording session, and you can see Roger & James right after they finished singing that day at: http://roberturban.com/newrecstudio.html luv - Robert Urban - PROOF producer URBAN PRODUCTIONS, NYC www.roberturban.com _________________________________________ In a message dated 4/19/06 6:37:14 AM, roger at worldofrogerkuhn.com writes: > Saturday, April 22nd to celebrate the release > of my new CD Proof -Roger Kuhn > With special guests Robert Urban and James Erickson > Proof release party > 7:00pm ? I have been asked by a few friends of late how the new music is going and realized I have been so busy in the studio that I haven't sent out an update. So here we go.... There are 12 songs complete and I am now in the mixing mode. You all know what that means...it's alot of work. The music has been given many positive pre-release thumbs up. Ed Mannix asked me after one Outmusic open mic where has all this power come from in my voice. What had I been doing? Jed Ryan noted in a review of my November 2005 gig at CBGB's Downstairs lounge that Tell Me Tell Me was delivered with "bravura" which by defintion is "Of, relating to, or being a brilliant performance technique or style", and "Brothers In Arms, Sister Soldiers" still ranks as one of my Top 10 anthems for revitalizing your gay pride...(THANKS JED!!!) MMMwah! The name of this new CD is....Journey of a Wordsmith. One week from now I'll be re-teaming with Drew Geraci, the photographer who shot Take Another Look. That's always a fun experience to see what we come up with. It's always a bit nerve racking at first to get the gears going and try to emulate in photography the physical image/design concept to project to the listener what the disc is about. I probably muse over this more than most, but I have always thought that album artwork is serious business...in some ways just as important as the music it represents. The other hot news is that I have a killer re-mixer on board, our very own Aaron Carl. Aaron is as most know is from Detroit and has his club thumpin' ear to the ground and finger on the pulse of clubland music. Aaron has already mixed one of the 4 featured bonus tracks for the CD and I will simply say this...Aaron is crafting a sound that you will find a perfect match for my music and you will agree, he is KING of his craft! I was hoping to make this next CD a multi-media package and also include 3 music videos. Those are coming, but will probably be in a separate yet related project. If I wait to get those on board, this disc would take forever to produce both in terms of time and financial resources. We'll also be creating a whole new website for this CD!!! The site will be chucked full of great stuff. I have realized through the endless support and interest of my fan base that I have a big presence and will be empowering my site through my music to not only promote my music, but also to help those of you hitting the site to discover some great organizations that have supported me, some amazing social organizations that I feel are VERY WORTHY for US to share and also a new section on artists that are BOTH amazing people and truly gifted performers. At times, I may be send out a SHOUT asking them to send support your way. We are also musing over a section that will be used for me to review and acknowledge artist's new works and social efforts as well. The next site is about EMPOWERMENT, kids. Oh and for those that have accused me of being an Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Freddy Mercury ( and those were the words EXACTLY) type of below the radar GAY/OUT performer who can get away with blending in...consider a change has come and as for blending in, I was nearly in a fist fight at the gym a week ago because some insane FREAK was screething at me on the floor as I was leaving, if I wanted to F*ck him because he could see I was one of those F*cking Faggot types. That I probably wanted to F*ck, right. But instead of beating his ass and getting his blood all over my 1000.00 leather coat and bag, I instead had him ejected from the club in seconds. We all have our axes to grind, so perhaps we could play nicer. So that's it in a nutshell. Thanks as always for your support and keeping Take Another Look going for as long as you have. It may not seem like alot when I reach out to you to vote for it here and there or tune in for radio interviews and air time on radio, but it really does HELP more than you can ever know. Here is proof...in 2003 Take Another Look ranked 7th out of the top 50 albums voted on by YOU at Outvoice.org for the year. I was out on tour in 2004 in Europe but came back in 2005 and you helped Take Another Look re-enter the charts and place 8th out of the top 50 albums for 2005!!! It was released in 2002! That's amazing support! That support has been noticed by many...most importantly ME! MMMMwah! More to come! To say that Kuhn knows his way around a stage while delivering a smooth performance would be as well. To say that you missed a night of a great music performed by one of NYC?s most promising OUT singer/songwriter is sad for you but every bit a treat for those present. Roger was celebrating his new labor of love, the release of his new CD, Proof. Last night, 4/22/06, Roger took the intimate stage at Rockwood Music Hall which was choked with friends and supporters and owned the room from his very first note to his last. It?s always amazing to this entertainment industry triple threat of many years, when I see a fellow performer who is so comfortable in his own skin on stage while bearing his heart and soul. Kuhn?s presentation was seamless, smooth likened to a silk road meeting a velvet street. Kuhn?s playlist was filled with really solid material not only well written structure wise, but also in his storytelling lyrics. His first song What?s Your Name which was expertly played on acoustic guitar in tandem with the very talented Robert Urban, is a great opener with its lyrical musing of someone he/Roger would like to meet and perhaps get to know better, by asking What?s Your Name. Aptly so, this is a perfect leadoff song especially when potentially playing to new fans which Kuhn should not have a problem making on his musical journey of growth and self exploration. Kuhn?s 2nd song, No Place Like Home, which was probably my most favorite, as it brought back to me wonderful memories of touring internationally with The Wizard of OZ, was a sign of a successful song in that as a songwriter, Roger touched a nerve in this listener and took me to a moment of personal reflection. Lyrically, it nailed down every aspect of the OZ vocabulary we all shamelessly know and love and utilized it in ingeniously telling the story of wanting to simply go home. And haven?t we all been down that yellow brick road ourselves a time or too? The song Lust From 17 spoke to the room about the young burning of youth driven love, lust and passion and how that walked hand in hand with Roger over the years. Another song which was steeped in personal passion and delivered with killer emotional connectivity was Roger?s song Two Nations. Two Nations draws on Roger?s pride of being American Indian and Caucasian. It draws the listener in to such a degree, that you can feel in his vocal delivery the conflict of which side he should choose to align himself with being that we unfortunately live in a society that makes one make such a choice. It brings to mind the somewhat campy Cher song, Half Breed but Kuhn?s song sung live has a purer ethnic anchor that Cher?s song lacks. One of the nights other highlights was when longtime friend, James Erickson, joined Roger on stage to back him vocally on the combined songs of the beautiful and tender Proof/Cradle Me and You Can Sleep While I Drive. The vocal blend of the two singers was rich in perfectly matched tone color, textured but not jagged and sounding as if they were vocal extensions of each other. The last 3 songs Beautiful You, again with Urban this time on piano, My Reality and the deliciously rocked out Black Leather, were all nailed with emotional precision and vocal power that each song demanded. Roger Kuhn said at one point during his show that he hadn?t been this nervous since he was 14, but on stage he was master and commander of his vocal ability in all of its? many colors and hues, his guitar playing, which alone is a show unto itself, and his stage presence that oozes sexuality with those seductive Bambi brown bedroom eyes. At a couple of points throughout his hour long set, I looked around the room to confirm that all eyes were on Kuhn and of course they were. Roger Kuhn jokes that he is the love child and Elvis and Cher. If that were actually true, his parents would be very proud that Roger got his Daddy?s good looks and talents and his Mother?s command of presence, showmanship and the innate ability to work a room while keeping all eyes on him. Message-ID: "THIS WAY OUT" LOST IN CYBERSPACE, FACES NEW FINANCIAL CHALLENGE International LGBT radio show cancelled by LGBT Internet giant, leaving the non-profit broadcasters off-line and cash-strapped. For Immediate Release: April 24, 2006 "This Way Out"/Overnight Productions (Inc.) Contact: Greg Gordon, Coordinating Producer (home/office) 818-986-4106 TWOradio at aol.com/www.thiswayout.org (An MSW attached version of this press release is available upon request.) Los Angeles - One of the LGBT online world's longest-lasting relationships will come to an end when "This Way Out: The International Gay and Lesbian Radio Magazine" concludes its nearly 11-year run on PlanetOut.com. Overnight Productions, the non-profit group that produces and distributes the weekly community-based program, has been informed that PlanetOut will not be renewing its exclusive Internet licensing agreement when it expires in mid-June. The termination leaves the groundbreaking show not only searching for a new online home, but even more urgently scrambling for the funds to replace PlanetOut's $1,000 monthly licensing fee that has become its only reliable income. Even before PlanetOut's official launch in 1995 -- and before most people saw the potential of Internet audio -- founder Tom Rielly solicited "This Way Out" Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon for exclusive webcasting rights. On the air since 1988, the award-winning show was already being distributed free to over 100 local community radio stations around the world, supporting its shoestring budget through grants, private donations, and mostly volunteer labor. The infusion of PlanetOut money was a terrific relief at the time, and as the competition for non-profit funding sources grew fiercer, "This Way Out" became increasingly dependent on PlanetOut to stay afloat. "'This Way Out' has had its share of near-death experiences, but rarely in our history has the team been as anxious about its future," says Gordon. Still, he insists, "we remain optimistic about finding alternative funding to underwrite our modest $750-per-program budget." Overnight Productions Board Chair Jon Beaupre adds, "Were trying to identify potential major donors, and asking for contributions and other fundraising assistance from anyone who can help." A just-awarded $5,000 grant from the Kicking Assets Fund of the Tides Foundation provides about enough cash to cover "This Way Out's" expenses for a few weeks beyond the end of the PlanetOut contract June 15th. The inspiration to carry on comes from the shows passionate, thirsty audience. "We get email from listeners all over the world - especially in places where being out can literally be lethal - telling us that the program is their lifeline," says Associate Producer Lucia Chappelle. That's why she says the team is adamant about their mission "to provide the program free to community stations, many of whom can't afford to pay for it, and to distribute it through as many different income-producing media outlets as we can." Beaupre is also developing a plan to podcast the show. "PlanetOut's decision was based on the company's business requirements," explains Managing Editor Julie Ross, "and certainly does not indicate any lack of respect for and appreciation of 'This Way Out' and its staff. We're so grateful for the consistently wonderful, enlightening and entertaining content the show has provided over the years. 'This Way Out' is a fine product and we at PlanetOut Inc. would truly love to see it receive the community support it deserves in order to continue and thrive on its own." Inquiries about online carriage of "This Way Out" are welcomed. The standup was hosted by the Spanish Club and the Hispanic American Leadership Organization. Photo by JAROD BERKSTRESSER Read it online: http://www.esubulletin.com/Bully/4-20/4-20-1.pdf The man who NBC called "America's Prince of Pride" performed a one-man show in Memorial Union's Webb Lecture Hall last night, telling the story of a Mexican family in the United States. Jade Esteban Estrada, a singer, comedian, actor and dancer, performed "Tortilla Heaven," a comedic, yet very real story of first, second and third generation Mexicans trying to relate to one another. The story revolves around Charles, or Carlitos, a third-generation Mexican immigrant whose mother abandons him, leaving him in San Antonio with his grandmother and uncle who speak little English. Charles doesn't speak Spanish because his mother, a writer believes her bilingualism is the cause of her inability to write proficiently. Estrada played each character, giving each one their own voice and mannerisms. Charles' grandmother and uncle live a very humble life in San Antonio. They don't even have air-conditioning. Charles' mother, Vera Mae Ruiz, has abandoned her roots in order to assimilate to big city life. She lives in New York and writes books urging people to speak only English. The play begins with Vera Mae and Charles flying to San Antonio to see her mother for the first time in years. Vera tells Charles, "Friends are a dime a dozen." After the performance, Estrada addressed the audience, thanking them for coming and asking the audience to pay attention to current events like immigration reform. "This is truly an amazing thing," Estrada said, talking about the Latino organization in response to the proposal. "Find out what all the commotion is about so you can vote, if there is a vote, based on fact and truth," he said. Estrada has appeared on "The Graham Norton Effect" on Comedy Central and HBO Latino. He is also a former lead dancer for Charo and a scratch vocalist for the Backstreet Boys. His music can be heard on the Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning television show, "The Shield" on FX. "Tortilla Heaven" was sponsored by the Emporia State Spanish Club and the Hispanic American Leadership Organization. Admission to the show, which took place at 7:00 p.m. yesterday, was free but there was a table set up outside accepting donations to help Edgar Torres, an Emporia High student who was involved in an automobile accident, with medical expenses. www.GetJaded.com From questoflifemusic at yahoo.com Wed Apr 26 10:41:29 2006 From: questoflifemusic at yahoo.com (The Quest of Life) Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2006 08:41:29 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [OutVoice] Friday, April 28th, On The Air Message-ID: <20060426154129.52955.qmail@web33612.mail.mud.yahoo.com> The Quest Of Life A radio show about inspiration, inspirational people, spirituality and music in the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community. Message-ID: To my peers in this crazy world of independent music making - I am trying to finish a new CD. I have recordings of a band from a studio in NY, but I do not have Pro-Tools, or correct monitor speakers. I have been mixing everything as best I can using ACID Pro. I have most of the tracks all laid out and a lot of them just need a new vocal and some mixing. I cannot afford any new equipment like monitors and only have monitor headphones. I think my tracks sound pretty good, even when burned and played on the stereo or in the car, but I want them to be able to sound as professional as possible. I am not an engineer and any EQ and compression decisions have been trial and error. Now as I think about completing the project and getting ready for manufacture, I am concerned about knowing how to format the final mixes, whether to compress the tracks, do I have harsh frequencies?, etc. These are things I know are addressed in Mastering, but I simply cannot afford a professional mastering job. I have gotten advice to wait until I CAN afford these things before going ahead, but I have been trying to get this thing made for 5 years and it has come to the point where I need to do the best I can with the resources available to me and get this CD out this year. I am going to have to compromise if I want to release this record in my lifetime. I was hoping someone might have some advice about techniques I could use, information resources, low cost alternatives, or anything else you think might help me get the best final product I can with what I have to work with. I know that my record may have some minor sonic flaws, but I am most concerned with doing the best I can and getting something out there that I am proud. I am confident that the music and performances are strong enough that it will be a great record. I'm just reaching out into the universe to see what other resources might come my way. Just put it out there, thats what they say ! That might continue for another month or so--KOOP has lined up a new location, and if you've ever tried to make a move on this scale you'll understand that you just don't know when you'll receive the word, "We're moving this weekend." I'm not sure if the move would result in time off the air, and I'd rather not have to cancel a phone call or studio visit. Things should be back to normal in June.. However, "normal" is changing too. Next week is "QueerWaves" last at 430pm to 6pm Central Time. As of May 13, you'll be able to catch "QueerWaves" on 91.7fm KOOP Austin Texas (or on our webstream at _http://www.koop.org_ (http://www.koop.org) ) from 3pm to 4pm Saturdays. You might notice we're going from 90 minutes to an hour. This is a change I requested. KOOP is run by volunteers, and one of the ways we programmers "pay" for airtime is by participating in volunteer activities. Since my heart attack a while back, I've been finding myself wanting more "me" time. The volunteer hours I need to complete to order to "earn" an hour a week fits where I am right now. Expect more Queer Concentrated content for the show. And yes, while I was waiting for final word on my place in the new schedule, I was even more reluctant to plan interviews and the like. I wasn't sure when "QueerWaves" would be, so I couldn't make plans for interviews or visits. Heck, I'll be honest--if the new date and time created a hassle, I might not have been able to continue my involvement with the show at all. But I love my new time slot. Heck, I'll even be able to record my show! (Ever try to find a 90 minute tape, much less a 90 minute disc?) I'm proud to continue on KOOP's award-winning Saturday's schedule, and I invite anyone who listens to "QueerWaves" to check out the rest of the day--heck, with our new schedule, check out all of KOOP's fine programs. After all, when ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY declared that KOOP was one of the reasons to listen to radio on the Internet, they must have been on to something, right? So look up _http://www.koop.org_ (http://www.koop.org) this week to find out the new schedule--and why not add KOOP to your MySpace Friends? Man, my weekly playlists aren't NEARLY this long..
