The week of 12/19/05 on
T H I S W A Y O U T
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
Cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain" makes movie "queerstory";
Latvia's parliament enshrines marriage bias, a Taiwan "engagement" party
protests inequality, liberal Roman Catholics are revolted by the gay
priest ban, a refugee from Mugabe's homophobia is denied U.S. asylum,
Ford changes course to avoid a right turn, and more global GLBT news;
plus Boy Howdy, a tech toys song to make the Yuletide gay!
* In "NewsWrap": Latvia's parliament adds hetero marriage exclusivity to the
nation's constitution, but the lower house of the Czech Republic approves a
bill to give same gender couples some of the rights of marriage... two gay men
in Taiwan publicly celebrate their "engagement" with family and friends...
Roman Catholic priests and lay people around the world express their
dissatisfaction with the Vatican's recent pronouncement barring gay men from the
seminary... despite intense homophobia in his homeland, the U.S. denies asylum to a gay
Zimbabwean... the Ford Motor Company "has a better idea" about gay
advertising... and more GLBT news from around the world [written this week by JON
BEAUPRE, LUCIA CHAPPELLE & GREG GORDON, and reported by JON BEAUPRE & SHERI LUNN].
* From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee comes an epic American love
story, based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx
and adapted for the screen by the team of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry
McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Set against the sweeping vistas of Wyoming and
Texas, the film tells the story of two young men - a ranch-hand and a rodeo cowboy
- who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection,
one whose complications, joys and tragedies provide a testament to the
endurance and power of love. The critically acclaimed "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN" is being
hailed as the biggest "gay" film since "Philadelphia", not just because of
the film itself, but because of the involvement of two of Hollywood's hottest
heterosexual stars in the leads. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE talks with director
ANG LEE and stars JAKE GYLLENHAAL and HEATH LEDGER about the heart-wrenching
film and their much-ballyhooed "bravery" (with preview clips and outro music
from the movie's "He Was A Friend of Mine" by WILLIE NELSON)
[www.PrideOnScreen.com].
* "Boy Howdy" singer/songwriter JAY SPEARS serenades Santa with his list of
holi-gay tech toys in "JAY'S CHRISTMAS SONG" [www.jayspears.com].
