The week of 12/05/05 on
T H I S W A Y O U T
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
Transworld classics, collective creativity & rock roll in the "Audiofile";
Protests mount over repression in Poland;
South Africa's top court tolls wedding bells for same gender couples,
Belgium's lower house okays adoptions for lesbigay marrieds, the ACT steps
forward while two Aussie states step back, the Vatican releases its
anticipated "Instruction" against gay seminarians, and more GLBT news
* In "NewsWrap": South Africa's Constitutional Court orders that marriage
equality for same gender couples be enacted by parliament within 12 months...
Belgium's lower house passes a bill to give gay and lesbian couples adoptions
equality... the government of the Australian Capital Territory announces its
intention to introduce a civil unions bill in the Legislative Assembly, but
Tasmania's state parliament votes down a proposal to allow consideration of
marriage equality, and a bill to give queer couples financial rights equivalent to
marriage stalls in South Australia's state legislature... some 26 men arrested
during the raid of an alleged gay marriage party in the United Arab Emirates
face not only Muslim law-ordered lashings and prison time but forced hormone
treatments... the formal release of the Vatican's already much-discussed
"Instruction" banning gay men from Roman Catholic seminaries leaves several questions
unanswered... and other GLBT news from around the world (written this week by
LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON and reported by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and SHERI
LUNN).
* Homophobia and freedom of speech are becoming the focal points for action
by the opposition to POLAND's new Law and Justice Party government. Late
November rallies in Gdansk, Lodz, Krakow and other cities protested the banning of
a gay rights march in Poznan. A cross-section of human rights activists
joined in to demand tolerance and freedom of speech from the country's new
conservative leaders. Poland is already under a warning from the European Union not
to limit the rights of gays and lesbians. New President Lech Kaczynski himself
banned two local Gay Pride marches while he was mayor of WARSAW, and his
campaign was peppered with anti-gay rhetoric. But people in the capitol would not
be silenced this time, as DANUTA SZAFRANIEC of Free Speech Radio News reports
from the streets of Warsaw.
* Some sultry vocals (excerpts from "Black Diamond Days" and "Angel From
Montgomery", a duet with Mark Weigle, from VERONICA KLAUS' "LIVE AT THE LODGE");
a band's reunion ("Male Privledge" and "Gender" from FEMME MESSIAH's "ORCHIDS
IN THE ARCTIC"); and a roots rock activist ("Backs Against the Wall" and
"Road to Trinidad" from GEORGIE JESSUP's "WOMAN IN A MAN'S SUIT") all have one
thing in common to make for an interesting set from the "AUDIOFILE" [with
comments by the artists about their music, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE and
written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM/www.audiofile.org].
