Q television has offered to develop the show, and Madonna's new TV production firm MAVERICK TV has signed on as partners. The critical acclaim and Oscar chatter around BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is helping a lot. The film is great, bring tissues cause you're gonna cry, and it's one of the first mainstream projects to address love, in western gay culture. BROKEBACK is about two ficticious characters whilst AMERICAN PRIDE is about you- real people, living, working, singing, loving, and just wanting to be accepted, treated equally. We are working on it everyday. Many people have dropped away, many have hopped onboard. Thank you to Doug Stevens for his sage advice, Thank you to Patrick Haggerty for his faith, and thank y'all for staying in contact, envisioning it being produced and airing by holding it positively in your thoughts and prayers. Belgium's lower house passes a bill to give gay and lesbian couples adoptions equality... the government of the Australian Capital Territory announces its intention to introduce a civil unions bill in the Legislative Assembly, but Tasmania's state parliament votes down a proposal to allow consideration of marriage equality, and a bill to give queer couples financial rights equivalent to marriage stalls in South Australia's state legislature... some 26 men arrested during the raid of an alleged gay marriage party in the United Arab Emirates face not only Muslim law-ordered lashings and prison time but forced hormone treatments... the formal release of the Vatican's already much-discussed "Instruction" banning gay men from Roman Catholic seminaries leaves several questions unanswered... and other GLBT news from around the world (written this week by LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON and reported by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and SHERI LUNN). * Homophobia and freedom of speech are becoming the focal points for action by the opposition to POLAND's new Law and Justice Party government. Late November rallies in Gdansk, Lodz, Krakow and other cities protested the banning of a gay rights march in Poznan. A cross-section of human rights activists joined in to demand tolerance and freedom of speech from the country's new conservative leaders. Poland is already under a warning from the European Union not to limit the rights of gays and lesbians. New President Lech Kaczynski himself banned two local Gay Pride marches while he was mayor of WARSAW, and his campaign was peppered with anti-gay rhetoric. But people in the capitol would not be silenced this time, as DANUTA SZAFRANIEC of Free Speech Radio News reports from the streets of Warsaw. * Some sultry vocals (excerpts from "Black Diamond Days" and "Angel From Montgomery", a duet with Mark Weigle, from VERONICA KLAUS' "LIVE AT THE LODGE"); a band's reunion ("Male Privledge" and "Gender" from FEMME MESSIAH's "ORCHIDS IN THE ARCTIC"); and a roots rock activist ("Backs Against the Wall" and "Road to Trinidad" from GEORGIE JESSUP's "WOMAN IN A MAN'S SUIT") all have one thing in common to make for an interesting set from the "AUDIOFILE" [with comments by the artists about their music, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM/www.audiofile.org]. = artist contact info = VERONICA KLAUS FEMME MESSIAH GEORGIE JESSUP 500 Oak Apt #2 Gallae Records 7711 Apple Ave San Francisco, CA 94102 P.O. Wisconsin's state Senate approves a constitutional amendment to ban any legal recognition of same gender couples... while still needing the state legislature's approval, supporters of an initiative to eliminate marriage equality in Massachusetts submit many more than the required number of petition signatures to make it eligible for the 2008 ballot... statistics show that far fewer lesbigay couples sought civil unions registration in Connecticut than those seeking marriage licenses in Massachusetts during the same initial 6-week period each became legal... in a case with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" implications, the U.S. Supreme Court hears a challenge to a law requiring universities getting federal money to allow military recruiters on campus... seemingly caving to a boycott threatened by the anti-queer American Family Association, Ford Motor Company confirms that it's pulling ads for its luxury brands from all gay publications... and other GLBT news from around the world [written this week by JON BEAUPRE, LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON and reported by GREG GORDON and JON BEAUPRE). * Just over 18 months ago, pioneering openly gay MP SVEND ROBINSON resigned from the CANADIAN parliament after admitting he'd stolen an expensive ring from a jewelry auction. Robinson told reporters at the time that he'd been experiencing severe emotional distress and had "just snapped." He later said he'd been diagnosed with a mild form of bipolar disorder and has since, he says at the request of some mental health groups, been speaking publicly on that issue. Robinson has announced his return to political life as the New Democratic Party candidate in VANCOUVER CENTRE, the heart of Vancouver's queer community. "This Way Out" correspondent HEATHER KITCHING ["QueerFM"/CiTR-Vancouver] talks with Robinson about his controversial comeback candidacy in the January 23rd federal election against an arguably popular LGBT ally, Liberal MP Dr. Hedy Fry. * Bree is highly educated, conservative, and transsexual. She's living in a poor section of Los Angeles and working two jobs to save money for her final sexual reassignment surgery, when she receives a fateful phone call. It's Toby, a jailed teenage hustler looking for his father -- and Bree is shocked to discover that a heterosexual encounter during her life as a man resulted in a son. Bree wants no part of Toby, but her therapist insists she must confront her past and withholds legal permission for Bree' s final operation until she has met the boy. Grudgingly Bree dips into her precious operation fund and flies to New York to bail Toby out, and they begin a "TRANSAMERICA" journey. Gay director DUNCAN TUCKER's "Transamerica" stars FELICITY HUFFMAN ("Desperate Housewives") and KEVIN ZEGERS ("Air Bud"). Along with clips from the movie, This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE chats with the principals about a road trip film that covers a lot more than geography [www.PrideOnScreen.com]. ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Roman Catholic priests and lay people around the world express their dissatisfaction with the Vatican's recent pronouncement barring gay men from the seminary... despite intense homophobia in his homeland, the U.S. denies asylum to a gay Zimbabwean... the Ford Motor Company "has a better idea" about gay advertising... and more GLBT news from around the world [written this week by JON BEAUPRE, LUCIA CHAPPELLE & GREG GORDON, and reported by JON BEAUPRE & SHERI LUNN]. * From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee comes an epic American love story, based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx and adapted for the screen by the team of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Set against the sweeping vistas of Wyoming and Texas, the film tells the story of two young men - a ranch-hand and a rodeo cowboy - who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection, one whose complications, joys and tragedies provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. The critically acclaimed "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN" is being hailed as the biggest "gay" film since "Philadelphia", not just because of the film itself, but because of the involvement of two of Hollywood's hottest heterosexual stars in the leads. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE talks with director ANG LEE and stars JAKE GYLLENHAAL and HEATH LEDGER about the heart-wrenching film and their much-ballyhooed "bravery" (with preview clips and outro music from the movie's "He Was A Friend of Mine" by WILLIE NELSON) [www.PrideOnScreen.com]. * "Boy Howdy" singer/songwriter JAY SPEARS serenades Santa with his list of holi-gay tech toys in "JAY'S CHRISTMAS SONG" [www.jayspears.com]. ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Photos will be coming soon !! We had a fantastic turnout and a grand time was had by all. The stage was set for Holiday magic as Victoria held court on her comfy couch, complete with Xmas tree. She opened the show with "Santa Baby". Charlie K. Brown and Freddy Freeman asked Daddy to Please not get Drunk on Xmas, then Sterlin roasted our chestnuts with "the Christmas Song" while Leon dreamed of a "White Xmas". Freddy said " Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and treated us to a Christmas Story about "The Christians and Pagans". He then travelled with Charlie down Joni Mitchell's "River" and led Charlie, Martin and Jay in waiting for an "Echo". Mathew Temple serenaded us with a tradtitional Irish Christmas tune. All of this was quite spectacular, but the show was really stolen by the one and only Santa Claus, and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. J & S did a medley of thier greatest songs like "Up on the Housetop" and "Joy to the World". that had some Sisters falling on thier knees in worship !!! If that wasnt enough, we were then treated to YOLANDA !! Yolanda was sparkling and lit up wiht headlights in hot leather pants as he burst on stage to sing his new dance track of "Alien Love Child" produced by Freddy an Jay Freeman. Yolanda was then presented a very special guitar that had been personalized wiht his own artwork and lots of glitter and sequins ( the guitar was designed by Jay Freeman) Yolanda then went on to deliver a killer acoustic set that ended with Freddy, Martin and Brian joining him for his Lullaby "Angels". Martin Swinger stepped on stage and had the Bears right where he wanted them delivering a fantastic set that included his classics, Huggin and Chalkin, Give Us our Own, Walzting with Bears, and many more. MArti's honeybear Brian joined him to harmonize and there wasnt a dry eye in the house, when Martin sang Teddy Bear Lullaby. Everyone came back to so thank you and our holiday special came to a close ! Many thanks to our sponsors: Church Street Freedom Press, The Chute Complex, Prater Productions, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Music City Bears. Our wonderful performers, Victoria "Pork Chop" Parker, Martin Swinger (with Honeybear), Yolanda, Charlie K. Brown, Matthew Temple, Sterlin and Leon, Saint Nick, and Jesus Christ. Working behind the scenes, Phil and Sam on piano and sound, Rich doing the recording, Phil snapping pics, Dean and Will and many other helping to move stuff, Jay for everything you do.
